Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for Da Capo’s January 2023 Origins concert, Julian’s Hazelnut (2022) by Adrienne Inglis sets text by Julian of Norwich for treble voices and B flat clarinet. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. Near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†The beautiful Medieval English text for this piece is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I lines 148-154 in which Julian reflects on the vision she experienced about a hazelnut in the palm of her hand. She comes to understand that God loves even a small, ordinary thing like a hazelnut, such that it will not disintegrate but last forever because of God’s love for it. In Julian’s vision, the hazelnut symbolizes all that is made — all of Creation that God made and loves forever. The music combines Medieval sounds and counterpoint with lush, modern harmonies, woven together with the smooth color and elegant lines of the clarinet. Singers use Original Pronunciation to capture the lyricism of Julian’s words. May this piece inspire the same awe and amazement at God’s beloved Creation that Julian felt centuries ago.

Composed by Yoko Kanno. Arranged by Benjamin Karaca. 20th Century,Film/TV,Jazz,Multicultural,Pop,World. 14 pages. Benjamin Karaca #902242. Published by Benjamin Karaca (A0.1313481).

Goodnight Julia is a beautiful ballad that is part of the soundtrack of the 1998 anime show Cowboy Bebop. The piece is characterized by its gentle and melancholic melody, performed by a Tenor Saxophone and Piano duo.

I have transcribed the piano part for a Saxophone Quartet. In doing so, I made some adjustments to accommodate the sound and technical capabilities of the Saxophone Ensemble. Originally, I had the SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Baritone) lineup in mind. However, I have added some substitute parts to make the arrangement playable with other instrumentations as well. The solo is originally played on a Tenor Saxophone. The part also works well for an Alto Saxophone.

Saxophone Quintet SATTB (and other lineups). Duration 2:00 min. Level 4/5.

Part 1: Soprano Sax
Part 2: Alto Sax / Tenor Sax
Part 3 (SOLO): Alto Sax / Tenor Sax
Part 4: Tenor Sax / Baritone Sax
Part 5: Baritone Sax / Bass Sax
Score in C

A high-quality arrangement by a professional musician. It also includes interesting information about the piece and helpful tips for interpretation. For more information, please visit my website:

Composed by Maria Thompson Corley/William Steffe. Arranged by Maria Thompson Corley. Concert,Contemporary,Holiday,Patriotic. Score. 24 pages. Maria Thompson Corley #6679339. Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.845954).

Commissioned by Julia Carey and Juventas Ensemble, this duet was premiered in early July of 2021 by Kelley Hollis, soprano, James Dargan, baritone, and Julia Carey, piano as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. The title of the concert was Yearning to Breathe Free. Julia conceived of the idea of combining Dr. King's I've been to the mountaintop speech with Julia Ward Howe's Battle Hymn of the Republic, however, the rights to Dr. King's speech weren't made available in time. As a result, the composer wrote a poem based on the portion of Exodus to which King alluded in his famous speech, in which Moses is giving a final speech to the Israelites from Mount Nebo. He knows he won't be allowed to cross over, and so he urges his people to be courageous as they continue on without him.

The opening is very dissonant, because the images of a terrible swift sword unleashing fateful lightning struck me as terrifying. After commanding the heavens to let him speak, Moses also acknowledges his fear, as well. As the piece progresses, the familiar Battle Hymn Melody appears, as does Go Down Moses.

James Dargan, for whom the piece was written, has an unusual range. Alternate notes are provided, as a result.

The piece starts at about 1:18:10 of the concert, which can be found on the Juventas website.

Composed by Julian Harvey. 20th Century,Contemporary. 7 pages. Julian Harvey #3430675. Published by Julian Harvey (A0.954516).

I am a composer and adult flute student. I composed a one movement flute trio, Flute Fare,  and showed it to my flute teacher, Susan Levitin, who then showed it and other works to three of her younger students. The students selected my piece for performance without knowing that I was working with the same teacher. They have performed the work several times. I believe it is tuneful and not overly challenging although some practice will be required. Incidentally, the musicians were able to play from the full score. Julian Harvey

Enjoy this Spanish/English bilingual to perform in one or both languages!
Beautiful modal aleatoric setting of sacred text by Julian of Norwich suitable for any combination of voices accompanied by the nature soundtrack found at the YouTube link https://youtu.be/P3R2lLkAntE. A terrific introduction to aleatory, this gorgeous piece can include chimes or a pitched melodic instrument such as a flute.

Text from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part III LXXXIII lines 3362-3364
Thus I saw and understode that our feith is oure light in our night, which light is God, our endless day.

Así vi y comprendí que nuestra fe es nuestra luz en nuestra noche, cuya luz es Dios, nuestro día sin fin.

Program note — Composed by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) while sheltering in place during the coronavirus pandemic, Oure Light in Oure Night (2020) sets text by Julian of Norwich for voices with a nature soundtrack. The video format is designed especially for use by choirs singing remotely on an online platform such as Zoom, Cleanfeed, Jamulus, or other. Text is from The Shewings of Julian of Norwich, Part I LXXXIII lines 3362-3364:  “Thus I saw and understode that our feith is oure light in our night, which light is God, our endless day.†The soundtrack of night sounds changing to dawn reflects the message of hope in Julian’s text. Beginning with the sounds of dusk, the whispered words blend with insect sounds. The modal aleatoric passages create an atmosphere of echoing bells as voices overlap. As night passes into day, the modality changes and the insect night sounds shift to the dawn chorus of birds. Born in about 1343 in Norwich, England, Julian survived the Black Plague as a girl of six. She became an anchoress at St. Julian’s Church in Norwich where she lived in prayerful seclusion. In 1373, she became very sick at age 30. When Julian was near the point of death, a curate showed her a crucifix for comfort. She then experienced a series of intense visions of Christ and recovered from her illness to write eloquently about her “shewings.†Her beautiful Medieval English words reassure us with the hope that our faith in God is our light in times of trouble.

SKU: A0.951609

Composed by Julia Ward Howe. Arranged by Travis Hayman. Folk,Holiday,Patriotic. Individual part. 7 pages. Travis Hayman #6416609. Published by Travis Hayman (A0.951609).

The Battle Hymn of the Republic, also known as Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory outside of the United States, is a popular American patriotic song by the abolitionist writer Julia Ward Howe.

Howe wrote her lyrics to the music of the song John Brown's Body in November 1861 and first published them in The Atlantic Monthly in February 1862. The song links the judgment of the wicked at the end of the age (through allusions to biblical passages such as Isaiah 63 and Revelation 19) with the American Civil War.
