DvoÅ™Ã¡k Background

AntonÃn DvoÅ™Ã¡k (1841 â€“1904) was, of course, a composer from Czechoslovakia. As a matter of fact, he was among the first Bohemian composers to attain universal recognition. It is important to realize that the late Romantic Nationalist period featured composers who used traditional and folk elements to portray the character of their nation. In particular, we see this in the music of Grieg (Norway), Finland (Sibelius), and Smetana (Bohemia). Â DvoÅ™Ã¡k relied markedly on rhythms and other characteristics of Moravian and Bohemian folk music.

Ascent to Fame

DvoÅ™Ã¡k was truly a child musical prodigy on the violin. The premiere performances of his compositions notably occurred in 1872 and 1873. He submitted his First Symphony in particular to a German competition, but it failed to win. Consequently, in 1874 he presented two more symphonies to the Austrian State Prize for Composition. Johannes Brahms was the principal of the jury and was accordingly very impressed. They forthwith awarded the prize to DvoÅ™Ã¡k in 1874, 1876, and 1877. At this point, Brahms thereupon endorsed DvoÅ™Ã¡k to the publisher Simrock. Later, the publisher commissioned DvoÅ™Ã¡k to compose the Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. These became popular overnight and, as a result, DvoÅ™Ã¡k's worldwide status was launched.

International Status

DvoÅ™Ã¡k visited England upon invitation all nine times. On each visit, he frequently conducted performances of his own compositions. He conducted concerts of his music, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Eventually, the Prague Conservatory in fact appointed DvoÅ™Ã¡k as a professor. There, to be sure, he wrote his famous Dumky Trio.

United States

Consequently, the National Conservatory of Music of America appointed him as director in 1892. As a result, DvoÅ™Ã¡k composed his two most famous symphonic works: the Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), which spread his name universally, and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, one of the most famous of all cello works. Moreover, he wrote his most celebrated American String Quartet during this time. At the same time, because of his growing recognition in Europe and his homesickness for his own country, he left to return to Bohemia in 1895.

Samba do AviÃ£o (a.k.a. Song of the Jet, translated literally as Airplane Samba) is a Brazilian song composed in 1962 by AntÃ´nio Carlos Jobim, who also wrote the original Portuguese lyrics. The English-language lyrics are by Gene Lees.

In the biography Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Illuminated Man, Helena Jobim describes how her brother came up with the idea for the song: Tom's many walks from Ipanema to Santos Dumont Airport yielded that ode of beauty... He would head towards the airport, following the water's edge around Guanabara's Bay. The pretext to go there was to buy foreign magazines and newspapers. From Santos Dumont Airport he could observe his passion, the airplane. Yet he still kept some distance from those machines. He was afraid of flying, but he loved their power, splendor, and aerodynamics-man's conquest over machine.

In the song, Jobim writes about landing at GaleÃ£o in Rio de Janeiro. The airport was renamed in his honor in 1999 and is now called Rio de Janeiroâ€“Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport.

Jobim wrote Samba do AviÃ£o for an Italian film, Copacabana Palace (1962), where it was performed by Jula De Palma and I 4 + 4 di Nora Orlandi. The movie was filmed in Rio and features cameo appearances by Jobim, JoÃ£o Gilberto and Os Cariocas.

The first performance of the song was by Jobim and Os Cariocas in August 1962 at the Au Bon Gourmet restaurant in Copacabana, Rio, at what music historian Ruy Castro calls the bossa nova show to end all bossa nova shows, as it featured Jobim, JoÃ£o Gilberto, VinÃcius de Moraes and Os Cariocas on stage together for the only time.

The first recording of the song was released in October 1962 by Elza Laranjeira. Os Cariocas had a hit with their rendition in 1963.

The first English-language version was by Tony Bennett for his 1965 album If I Ruled the World: Songs for the Jet Set.

The second movement is the famous Andante in F Major: the soloist play with a dreamlike melody over an accompaniment consisting of repeated-note triplets. This movement also was featured in the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan. As a result, the piece has become widely known as the Elvira Madigan concerto.ï»¿

It was featured in the 1967 Swedish film Elvira Madigan. As a result, the piece has become widely known as the Elvira Madigan concerto.

Neil Diamond's 1972 song Song Sung Blue was based on a theme from the andante movement of the concerto.

It is arranged for clarinet quintet.( Eb, 2 Bbs, alto and bass).
