Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1490010

Composed by Text: Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) Tune: Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914. Arranged by Ken Litton. Christian,Lent,Religious,Sacred. 11 pages. Artist of Note, Inc. #1066874. Published by Artist of Note, Inc. (A0.1490010).

Whiter Than the Snow/Eden Reeder Latta  - Henry Southwick Perkins BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN
arr. Ken Litton (ASCAP)As an SBC music missionary active in Brazil I quickly discovered the hymns missionaries had taken with them as the work gained impetus from the 1890s when the Bagbys arrived to build on the foundation laid by early pioneers like Solomon Ginsburg. I found myself leading those hymns from the nearly 100 year old Cantor Cristăo (Christian Singer) in the strongly attended evening services at the Igreja Batista Rio Doce (Sweet River Baptist Church) in Recife, with people literally leaning in through the windows from outside to sing along. Just a normal p.m. attendance or... curiosity about the missionary leading? No, certainly it was the message of the gospel in these great hymns and in the Brazilians’ creative work as well. I mainly remember holding that small print hymnal in one hand and leading with the other (shaking badly) and singing in Portuguese!
From that kind of congregational participation I vividly remember the hymn Blessed be the Fountain by Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) and Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914) with it’s energetic dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm figures and text of confession based on Zechariah 13:1. That text was very important in the lives of disciples in Brazil and in my own heart. Here I have used only the verses of the text and tune, simply smoothing out the rhythm and adjusting the lyric to more modern usage (yet preserving the devotional pronouns Thee, Thy and Thine).
The tune BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN is altered in rhythm, tempo and one descending interval from the original.  The arrangement is by me, having built the intro, interlude and key change as well as the ending from the material that constituted the refrain in the origina. As a bridge and additional textual/musical impulse into the key change and final verse I’ve interpolated the refrain from the well-known gospel hymn Whiter than Snow (FISCHER) by James Nicholson and William G. Fischer.
The voices include a wide variety of unison, two-part and four-part passages that are well within the capability of the average church choir. The accompaniment difficulty level is about as minimal as it can be I hope, while still reflecting support for the voices, a measure of variety as well as some real independence.
I certainly think choirs of some ability and their dedicated accompanists will enjoyWhiter Than the Snow as much as I have in developing it.

This fine testimony and worship expression is limited to very practical ranges in unison, two, there and four parts, featuring a highly doable lift at the key change up to the key of C.
And, even though there is a second voice in the tenor and bass voices at measure 57 the congregation could, optionally sing along in unison (having heard the refrain a couple of times).
The accompaniment, though syncopated is about as simple as possible with very little in the left hand beyond beat three of any measure, especially when the right hand is busy.
And—importantly—this arrangement retains the gospel hymn included in the artist version, but with a choral approach and a voicing that is more true to Down at the Cross in its hymnal versions, so “It’s more like we know it.

TAPS  A Remembrance
Bb Solo Trumpet, Narrator, Piano/Organ/Orchestra, optional SATB Choir  > 2:00
TAPS - A Remembrance is ideal for the kinds of brief but important Memorial Day and/or Independence Day observances so often called for in our time.
The poignant narration recalls the story of United States Army Sergeant Keith Clark playing the bugle call know today as Taps for the interment of President John F. Kennedy (November of 1963). As author William Manchester later wrote, “The 6th note of the 24 he played seemed like “a catch in your voice or a swiftly stifled sob” that the whole world heard, and that remains part of our national heritage.
The background arrangement (optionally with chorus) heightens the emotion of the story until both give way to a regulation trumpet solo version that includes the grace note error and fades at the end. The orchestration is done in a 4 Part + format that lends itself to optional performance by any section of the orchestra (originally for brass alone).
The choral octavo carries the complete narration (also see below) with accompaniment (playable by/adaptable to organ) and the solo trumpet part (all that’s really needed to perform the piece) along with permission to reproduce the octavo for optional choir/ensemble.
The choral writing involves divisi only at two easily sung cadence points.
And, it can be performed by just the brass and the narrator.
For those who may not know the story:

----
NARRATOR:  Since the mid 1800s the bugle call known today as Taps has heralded rest for the weary, as well as comfort and encouragement in times of deep personal and collective grief.*
* music begins
At about 3:00 p.m. on November 24th 1963, as the nation mourned the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, United States Army Sergeant Keith Clark raised his bugle at Arlington National Cemetery [† with thoughts of I Corinthians 15:51 in mind, “The trumpet shall sound”].
Clearly broadcast throughout the country and around the world, the 6th note of the 24 he played seemed like “a catch in your voice or a swiftly stifled sob” as author William Manchester put it. But, as another observer** noted: “Like the crack in the Liberty Bell, it remains part of our
national heritage.”
(Taps solo Trumpet with intentional error at m.14 continues)

Angel, Blow that Trumpet
Words & Music by Ken Litton (ASCAP)
TTBB Piano, opt. String Bass, Clarinet, Trumpet & Trombone
Many choirs/ensembles haven't done many trumpet-feature songs in the last decade or so. But, since the trumpet figures so prominently in the Bible why not try one?! And, since both the anthems and contemporary worship songs of today tend to neglect the second coming of Christ here’s an offering from the spiritual/anthem/jazz confluence.
Angel, Blow that Trumpet is based on I Corinthians 13:50-57 and I Thessalonians 4:13-18.  The style? Well, let’s call it “Natalie Sleeth meets New Orleans jazz!”
You’re almost sure to find the voicing very approachable, yet thrilling for SATB (TTBB and SSA also available).
The accompaniment is a dixie-land styling originally conceived for piano, string bass/fretless electric bass/standard bass guitar (it would be fun to have someone do it on the “big bass viol”), Bb clarinet, trombone and Bb trumpet.
These parts are included with the choral score.
Above all, it's fairly easy to learn and fun to sing!
The clarinet and trombone parts are a lot of fun and the trumpet part features an easily playable/adaptable ending that nails the piece (actually the lower version is really nice). Plus, with the single exception of swinging the eighth note pairs, there’s no improvisation required here. These parts are really best for good, legit players just as written.
And, though I know that you have more than enough skill to get all of this from the score, the audio file in mp3 format (3:32) will also available separately.

OK, you still have that Christmas Eve (or other Advent) service coming up. And, like that night long ago when the organ was broken there’s a problem: With your keyboard player out, you need to play Silent Night with the congregation. And, though you don’t play guitar all that well, you’d rather do more than just the first stanza a cappella or you want to tell the story of how it was originally done. Well, here’s an answer that’s about as simple, playable and well edited as it gets. It’s not as easy for the singers as C or Bb, but a student guitarist can play it quite beautifully. And you can, too! Just use the guitar chord symbols. Prepare, then sleep in heavenly peace!

How about a blast from the past in the form of a highly playable dance for your student (high school/college), community, professional or even church orchestra?
The romantic ballad from Disney's classic animated film Cinderella (1950) originally ”sung” by Cinderella and Prince Charming as they finally dance together at the ball.
The accelerating introduction leads to the elegant melody with light accompaniment. Then, material from the intro brings an easily playable lift into a new key and the melody up an octave, leading to a dramatic chord resolution at the words “dreaming of.” Add a choice of effective endings and, well…it’s love at first play!

The Solid Rock with Rock of Ages | arr. Ken Litton
3-5 Octaves/2 Octaves Chimes (optional)
arranged by Ken Litton (ASCAP)
This text by Edward Mote (1834), one of the most reassuring of all hymns is paired with William B. Bradbury’s tune SOLID ROCK. Here it is bookmarked by introductory, contrasting and concluding material by Augustus Toplady’s Rock of Ages with music by Thomas Hastings, edited by Lowell Mason.
Scored for 3-5 octaves (24/52) of handbells with optional 2 octaves (20) handchimes, the arrangement moves from bold statement/quiet assurance to quiet remembrance of/echoes of God’s faithfulness. Then, on to o solid restatement and a final reminder, expressed in quiet rest.

O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing

Text by Charles Wesley/Music by Ken Litton (ASCAP)

SATB mixed voices, accompanied  optional Flute/C intrument

The stanzas of the text are combined here and some of its expressions personalized in order to emphasize the confident prayer of praise. And though the music is a little more meditative than many tunes, it is still in keeping with the original expression that helped give rise to the hymn:  “Had I a thousand tongues, I would praise Him with them all!”

After the piano and flute introduction, the new tune is lightly harmonized in both stanzas, but each has it’s own unique voicing at My gracious Master and You break the power, respectively. The brief flute/C instrument solo can add a lot to the piece, but an optional cut from the end of m.41 to m.59 and on to the key change could be offered in the score. After the key change the melody returns in unison, followed by a worshipful close.

The text is the familiar hymn of Edmund Hamilton Sears (1810-1876), an American clergyman ministering for many years in Massachusetts. After a retirement due to health concerns, his second Christmas hymn dating from about 1849 was published in The Christian Register. Of it a fellow minister by the name of Morrison wrote, I always feel that, however poor my Christmas sermon may be, the reading and singing of It Came Upon the Midnight Clear are enough to make up for all deficiencies.”
Here the tune is NOEL (CMD). The arrangement begins in Eb moving up to F, followed by an expressive (optionally a cappella) section in Dm. After a brief return to F for the final stanza (with a descant limited to top space F) there is a subtle surprise by joy to Em and on to a singable ending in G, with options for second soprano.
The voicing range from unison to 2-part and on to 3 and 4 parts, but in a singable, approachable range for choirs of medium ability and only a hint of easily sung divisi.
The accompaniment is active but playable and the score suggests a harpsichord voice as the keyboard option. The style of the piece——as well as the mp3 instrumentation—allude to abasso continuo optional part for cello, bassoon, or other C bass instrument, a separate medium difficulty part included.
And mp3 demo/slass accompaniment track is available separately.
