It is aĀ film adaptationĀ of the 1988 novelĀ Dances with WolvesĀ byĀ Michael BlakeĀ that tells the story ofĀ Union ArmyĀ LieutenantĀ John J. Dunbar (Costner), who travels to theĀ American frontierĀ to find a military post, and who meets a group ofĀ Lakota. Costner developed the film with an initial budget of $15Ā million.Ā Much of the dialogue is spoken inĀ LakotaĀ with English subtitles. It was shot from July to November 1989 inĀ South DakotaĀ andĀ Wyoming, and translated by Doris Leader Charge,Ā of the Lakota Studies department atĀ Sinte Gleska University. The film earned favourable reviews from critics and audiences, who praised Costner's directing, the performances, screenplay, score, cinematography, and production values. It was a box office hit, grossing $424.2Ā million worldwide, making it theĀ fourth-highest grossing film of 1990, and is the highest-grossing film forĀ Orion Pictures. The film was nominated for 12Ā Academy AwardsĀ at theĀ 63rd Academy AwardsĀ and won seven, includingĀ Best Picture,Ā Best DirectorĀ for Costner,Ā Best Adapted Screenplay,Ā Best Film Editing,Ā Best Cinematography,Ā Best Original Score, andĀ Best Sound Mixing. The film also won theĀ Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture ā Drama. It is credited as a leading influence for the revitalization of the Western genre of filmmaking in Hollywood.
