The première of Daudet's play, L'Arlésienne, with incidental music by Bizet, given at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on 30 September 1872, was a devastating event for both playwright and composer and the production was removed from the repertory after 19 performances. The critic Johannès Weber, however, was alert to the quality of Bizet's score and suggested that the composer should excerpt and rescore several pieces for the Concerts populaires where 'the lovely music would be better appreciated than at the Vaudeville'. Bizet must have moved rather quickly to follow Weber's suggestion, for the première of the first Arlésienne suite took place only six weeks later at the Concerts populaires on 10 November 1872 and the work in its new abridged form was soon taken up by many other orchestras. Bizet, however, did not turn to preparing a second suite from L'Arlésienne. Some four years after Bizet's death, the success of the first suite may have prompted his original publisher to commission the arrangement of more excerpts from the Arlésienne MS from Bizet's good friend Ernest Guiraud who had earlier written recitatives and put together a ballet for Carmen.

In 1872 Bizet wrote the incidental music to Daudet’s famous tragedy ‘L’Arlésienne’. He had to tailor his composition to an orchestra of only 26 players, but these limited forces turned out to pose a stimulating challenge rather than an obstacle. Shortly after the premiere, he arranged four of the movements and formed them into the Suite No. 1 for large orchestra. The Suite No. 2 was arranged by Ernest Guiraud four years after Bizet’s death.

Vorrei andarmene lontano

In questi giorni senza te

Vorrei sparire come un sogno

Che se apri gli occhi più non c’è

Vorrei tornare indietro al tempo

In cui esistevi solo tu

Ai bei momenti passati , le risate ed i baci

Come il sole e la luna io e te

 

Ma poi ritorno al mio presente

E la tua assenza brucia in me

Così lontani e distanti

Tu , come tutti quanti

E gentili parole che svaniscono al sole

 

Noi siamo come sole e luna

Che non si incontreranno  mai

Eterna lotta nel tempo

si corrono incontro

Per non abbracciarsi mai

E come il sole con la luna

Noi  non ci sfioreremo mai

Ti scaldo solo un istante

Ma sei freddo, scostante

Ed il giorno con me non vivi mai

Vivaldi – Sinfonia for strings and continuo from L’Olimpiade RV 725

L´Olimpiade. Dramma per Musica, is an opera in three acts based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio composed by Vivaldi and premiered at the Teatro Sant’Angelo on February 17, 1734, during the carnival. There is an earlier version based on the same libretto but written by Antonio Caldara in 1733. There are more than 50 later versions written by various authors, including Pergolesi (1735).

Vivaldi’s opera begins with a Sinfonia for strings (Allegro) followed by two instrumental movements: Andante in cut time, and Allegro in 3/8 time. This edition includes just the first Allegro.

There is an autograph copy in score format contained in the manuscript I-Tn, Foà 39, Bl. 1-140. The present edition is based on this manuscript.

It is very interesting to mention that there is a violin concerto based on this same symphony (or perhaps the thematic transfer was from the concerto to the symphony). It is the violin concerto in C major rv 177.

There are several sources for this concerto: Vivaldi’s autograph contained in the manuscript I-Tn, Foà 31, Bl. 14-25, in score format, and two sources in Dresden, the manuscript D-Dl, Mus. 2389-O-83 (score) and D-Dl, Mus. 2389-O-83a.

The concerto includes some changes from the Sinfonia. Although these are different works, the connection between the two pieces seems obvious and the annotations that we find in the violin concerto could complement the information that appears in the Sinfonia. For this reason, it is interesting to mention these changes in this edition.

Strana la storia che il vento narrò

Era un sussurro lontano

Lento mi avvolse e  mi circondò

Come l’eco di un canto sciamano

 

Ti ascolto sempre ,vento tu che sai

Leggende antiche e incantate

Mentre sussurri la memoria mia

Mi riporta a esperienze passate

 

Bella, bella, lei era bella

Viva da un tempo infinito

Era una strega dal dolce veleno

ed un cuore  tatuato  sul seno

 

Mille gli uomini attorno a lei

Ma di loro, lei non si curava

La sua potenza era immensa e perciò

Sottomettere il mondo voleva

 

so attraversare i muri e  ridare

 La vita a ogni cosa che muore

muovo gli oggetti e posso curare

ogni tipo di male o dolore

Cerco proseliti in chi come me

Viene dal mondo più nero

Capto le auree malvagie ed avrò

Il mio esercito immondo ed austero

 

Vento ti prego, dimmi come andò

Che più non voglio aspettare

Certo la strega poi si innamorò

E il suo cuore riempi di calore

 

Nera, nera , lei era nera

E non poteva cambiare

Lei non conosce  l’amore però

Il suo punto debole è il cuore

e colpirlo mentre ancora sogna

 

Cuore , cuore , cuore di strega

Batti da un tempo infinito

Ballo felice sul tuo ticchettio

E mi sento una strega un po’ anch’io

 

vento , ti prego non dirmi di più

che più non voglio ascoltare

ma ecco di nuovo quel canto sciamano

e la strega mi prende per mano……………
