Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1001565). This is an arrangement for 2-4 octave handbell choir of If I Had a Hammer.This protest song was written in 1950 in support of the progressive movement. The song was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays for the folk group The Weavers. It was made famous by the group Peter, Paul, and Mary and the singer Trini Lopez whose versions both charted in the top 10 on the charts in the 1960s.This version is arranged for 2-4 octave handbell choir and makes heavy use of mallets for most of the piece. There are some very quick changes between using mallets and normal ringing and there are a lot of syncopated rhythms throughout the piece. These challenges make this arrangement ideal for smaller bell choirs that are still at a intermediate or higher playing ability. Even though the song is not specifically intended for church services, the message of the song can be incorporated into quite a variety of religious themes.The arrangement is in the key of C with no accidentals. I went to a recent recital by a former student of mine, Mary Hubbell, where she sang an entire program of French songs on poems by Paul Verlaine. The composers included Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré, Reynaldo Hahn, and others. It inspired me to do my own Paul Verlaine song cycle. I purchased his Poémes saturniens on Amazon and saw that there are four collections of his poems. I immediately was drawn to the first one: Melancholia. There are eight poems in the set. 1. Program note: Last summer I wrote Préludes … Hommage à C.D.   All 12 movements were inspired by Debussy’s Book I of the same title.  I enjoyed it so much that I thought I would eventually  do Book II as well. As I got around to it I discovered that Book II did not resonate with me as did Book I.  So, I went looking at the many, many other solo piano works by C.D. and I came across his Six Épigraphes Antique which engaged me tremendously.   As I did with Book I, I took initial elements of Debussy’s music and then took off in my own direction from the original.   The original six épigraphes has a duration of 15.5 minutes.    That is too short for me.   So I added two more pieces from Debussy’s works: Poisson d’or and the famous Réverie.   It is now ca. 26 minutes in duration. He is most famous for his book, Physiologie du goût (The Physiology of Taste). According to Wikipedia, it is a book of his culinary reminiscences and reflections on the craft and science of cookery and the art of eating. Incidentally, the cheese Brillat-Savarin is named after him. I am a foodie and I have written quite a few works whose subjects are food related. My magnum food opus is Apicus de re Coquinaria (2023). Full scoreProgram note:Nancy Braithwaite, one of my dearest friend in the Netherlands, asked me to write a new work for her Rietveld Ensemble based in Utrecht. I said great, how about a work based solely on the waltz for clarinet, violin, cello and piano? She said that would be fabulous. So, it immediately reminded me that one of my favorite works by Maurice Ravel is his solo piano work, Valses nobles et sentimentales. It was interesting and revelatory to find out (from Wikipedia, of course) that Ravel was in turn inspired by Schubert's collection of waltzes entitled Valses nobles and Valses sentimentales. My quartet is in eight movements, as is the Ravel. The title of my work, Vanessa, is an acronym of sorts to the Ravel title, Valses nobles et sentimentales. I. Modéré - très franc II. Assez lent - avec une expression intense III. Modéré IV.
