The lyrics convey the message of comfort and joy, celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and the tidings of salvation from Satan's power. The song has been featured in various cultural works, including Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Despite claims that the music originated in the 15th century, evidence supporting this is lacking, and the earliest known source documenting the existence of the carol dates to the mid-18th century.
