Programme Notes - Solo Piano Work In 2006, I was living on the hills which form the border between England and Wales; this is deemed to be an area of special scientific interest where the many wonders of Nature abound.  Rhaeadr means 'waterfall' in the Welsh language and my piece is a sound picture of the myriad forms, shapes, stillnesses and polar dynamic forces that waterfalls can evoke; from thundering torrents and sunlit pools to droplets and sprays that spirit into being, white and ghostly mists before our very eyes.  The music begins with a ‘trickling’ movement from the top of the waterfall and makes it’s way down, crashing into rocks, swerving around them and almost coming to a halt in a  shallow, sunlit pool which lies, temporarily, in a plateau. Then, finding a crevice to squeeze through, the water continues it’s unrelenting descent - finally reaching the bottom of the hill and coming to rest in calm liquidity. My thanks go to the pianist, Marija Vrskova at the FAMES studio in Macedonia where Rhaeadr was recorded under my remote direction and mixed and mastered by Laurent Köpitz and his commendable team. So how can we fathom which stars show its true radiance?The only stars that have reliable radiance are the ones in the sky. All other stars are illusions meant to mimic the ones above. But we cannot let them deceive us. If you follow the stars in the sea, you will sink like the rocks. Down you will go into the abyss chasing an illusion you believed were the real stars. If you dig deeper until you are covered in mud, your eyes will become used to the abyss until you forget what you were even chasing. And if you look up at the stars above, you would quickly shy away from them as it causes affliction in your eyes. Children choirs and youth choirs of equal voices can use the upper parts, and mixed choirs sing all parts. My wish for the song is to let it take flight, engaging the singers to sing together and let the music go through their heart and soul. Commissioned by Julia Carey and Juventas Ensemble, this duet was premiered in early July of 2021 by Kelley Hollis, soprano, James Dargan, baritone, and Julia Carey, piano as a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. The title of the concert was Yearning to Breathe Free. Julia conceived of the idea of combining Dr. King's I've been to the mountaintop speech with Julia Ward Howe's Battle Hymn of the Republic, however, the rights to Dr. King's speech weren't made available in time. As a result, the composer wrote a poem based on the portion of Exodus to which King alluded in his famous speech, in which Moses is giving a final speech to the Israelites from Mount Nebo. He knows he won't be allowed to cross over, and so he urges his people to be courageous as they continue on without him. The opening is very dissonant, because the images of a terrible swift sword unleashing fateful lightning struck me as terrifying. After commanding the heavens to let him speak, Moses also acknowledges his fear, as well. As the piece progresses, the familiar Battle Hymn Melody appears, as does Go Down Moses.James Dargan, for whom the piece was written, has an unusual range. Alternate notes are provided, as a result. The piece starts at about 1:18:10 of the concert, which can be found on the Juventas website.
