Jazz Ensemble Jazz Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.947271 Composed by John Philips. Jazz,Latin. Score and parts. 34 pages. John Philips Music Service #3867643. Published by John Philips Music Service (A0.947271). First adjust tempo...175 minimum. This is a montuno which is often mistaken as a samba or merengue. The bass line must be as written. The harmonic structure for the solos is indicated and is limited so the soloists must think in lines, not just a lot of notes. You must use claves full time---no claves--no Latin Music. Intonation and a relaxed feel are needed to make this swing. If there are no solos, skip letter E/EE and go to F for the 2 bar chase solos, into the cascade, rhythm section solo, quiet interlude to sign. etc.If you want a Maynard or Buddy chart, look elsewhere. This series of charts uses nothing more complicated than eighth notes, are not frantic or screamers, extreme ranges and are hemi-demi-semi-quaver free. They depend on intonation and the players being not intimidated by what he is asked to play. There is no contest to see how high you can go before you need oxygen , how many notes you can play in 9 seconds or before your bell overheats , or how long it takes the audience to cover their earsRelaxed and confident players always play more in tune. Good harmonies, lines and realistic rhythm patterns will produce a good result that will swing and be enjoyed by player and listener alike.

Concert Band - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998359 Composed by Aaron Fonzi. Christmas,Contemporary,Folk,Standards. Score and parts. 25 pages. Aaron Fonzi #4834971. Published by Aaron Fonzi (A0.998359).      This lyrical piece is a delightful way to introduce your young band to ballad style. Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes.      Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

Marching Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1266023 By Metallica. By Cliff Burton, James Hetfield, and Lars Ulrich. Arranged by Jason Sullivann. Contest,Festival,March,Rock. Score and Parts. 117 pages. Green Bicycle Music #858759. Published by Green Bicycle Music (A0.1266023). For Advanced Marching band, Level 4-5. The concept of creating a Marching Band arrangement for a Metallica song actually had occurred to me several years ago. The announcement of the official competition spurred me to action, and Hey, Guess What? I still missed the deadline. Perhaps an underachiever of the Metallica Family, but a member nonetheless.  The arrangement is based on my Piano version of ORION (available on this site, of course). It follows the original closely, with some embellishments added.  Some of the soli playing is more challenging than many arrangements. The mood is more of a Concert piece for Marching Band, with plenty of energy, but more musical complexity. The PDF has been improved and replaced. The score is on Tabloid (11x17) size paper and the parts are on Letter (8.5x11) size. The parts will need to be trimmed for use. I believe it justly expresses the power of Metallica's music. This is not eligible for the 2023 competition. First: your group could play it anyway. Second: I will be on a quest to have it added for next year's version.  I anticipate this year's competition will go very well.

Choral Choir (TTBB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.928359 By Elvis Presley. By Richard Rodgers. Arranged by Thomas J. West. A Cappella,Rock. Octavo. 7 pages. Thomas J. West #5828197. Published by Thomas J. West (A0.928359). This TTBB a cappella arrangement with a tenor lead vocal is written as an homage to the beloved recording by The Marcels. It's the perfect song to introduce a high school tenor-bass ensemble to doo wop style and begs for finger snaps on beats 2 and 4. There's an optional upper harmony to go with the lead during the outro. This arrangement was originally performed by The Dreamers of Phi Mu Alpha a cappella group at Penn State University and taught completely by rote. Bass range is G2 to G3. Tenor 1 sits comfortably in falsetto on G4, F#4, and one A4. The lead and optional harmony have some Frankie Valli style melismas in the outro that range up to falsetto D5 and E5. www.thomasjwestmusic.com .

Piano,Violin - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.909635 Composed by T.H. Bayly, Jean Jacques Rousseau. Arranged by Christopher A. Sforza. Contemporary,Standards. 21 pages. Christopher A. Sforza #6596439. Published by Christopher A. Sforza (A0.909635). T.H. Bayly's Long, Long Ago and the folk song Go Tell Aunt Rhody (based on the music of Jean Jacques Rousseau), are two classic tunes learned and performed by beginning instrumentalists from around the world.  In Aunt Rhody's Dream, these two melodies come together in a new arrangement for violin ensemble with mixed-level parts.  Violin I, written for beginners, contains the melody overall (except for an instance where it switches to harmony to avoid low first finger patterns).  Violin II, written for intermediate players, contains interesting harmonies and rhythms.  Violin III, written for the advanced player, contains countermelodies and exciting variations on the original theme.  Violin IV is written completely using open pizzicato strings suitable for a very early player.  Included are the violin parts, piano reduction, and score.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1300078 By Bee Gees. By Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Country,Disco,Film/TV,Rock,Singer/Songwriter. Score. 4 pages. Timothy Stapay #889845. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1300078). How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is a song released by the Bee Gees in 1971. It was written by Barry and Robin Gibb and was the first single on the group's 1971 album Trafalgar. It was their first US No. 1 single and also reached No. 1 in Cashbox magazine for two weeks. The Bee Gees were a musical group formed in 1958 by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. The trio were especially successful in popular music in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and later as prominent performers in the disco music era in the mid- to late 1970s. The group sang recognisable three-part tight harmonies: Robin's clear vibrato lead vocals were a hallmark of their earlier hits, while Barry's R&B falsetto became their signature sound during the mid- to late 1970s and 1980s. The group wrote all their own original material, as well as writing and producing several major hits for other artists, and are regarded as one of the most important and influential acts in pop-music history. Bee Gees Lyrics:How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?I can think of younger days when living for my lifeWas everything a man could want to doI could never see tomorrowBut I was never told about the sorrowsAnd, how can you mend a broken heart? How can you stop the rain from falling down? How can you stop the sun from shining? What makes the world go 'round? How can you mend this broken man?How can a loser ever win? Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live againI can still feel the breeze that rustles through the treesAnd misty memories of days gone byWe could never see tomorrowNo one said a word about the sorrowAnd how can you mend a broken heart? How can you stop the rain from falling down? How can you stop the sun from shining? What makes the world go 'round? And how can you mend this broken man?How can a loser ever win? Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live againLa la la la la la, la la la laLa la la la la la, la la la laPlease help me mend my broken heart and let me live againDa da da daDa da da da, da da da da da, da.

Soprano voice and piano - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6665 For soprano and piano. Composed by John Casken. This edition: Sheet music. Downloadable. Duration 12 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6665. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6665). French.Chansons de Verlaine were completed in 2006. The third song, Colloque sentimental, was written in 2003 for Alison Smart and Katharine Durran’s New French Song project. It was as a result of having written one short song to words by Verlaine that I subsequently decided to set two further poems to make a group of three. All three were also set by Debussy: L’ombre des arbres and Chevaux de bois appear in Ariettes Oubliées, while Colloque sentimental belongs to Debussy’s second set of Fêtes Galantes. The poems I have grouped together are linked by the idea of three different landscapes. In the first, Verlaine precedes the words of his own sad, pale landscape with words from Cyrano de Bergerac about a nightingale who fears himself about to fall into a river and drown. In the second poem the landscape has been occupied by a fairground where men, women and children watch as the hobby-horses go round and round before night falls and the church tolls a passing-bell. The third poem takes us into an old park where two ghosts recall their past. The one wonders if the other remembers the happy days of their past lives, but the other doesn’t want to remember, barely acknowledging the closeness they once shared, seeing only that ‘hope has fled, defeated, towards the dark sky.’ I am very grateful to Roger Nichols and Dominique Mols for their advice with the setting of the French texts and with the translations. John Casken Colloque sentimental was first performed by Alison Smart and Katherine Durran at the Purcell Room in London on 13 July 2004.

Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1148027 Composed by American Folk Song. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Folk,Historic,Traditional. 36 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #747960. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.1148027). This song uses the same melody as a 19th century African-American spiritual, The Gospel Train. The Cindy lyrics were adapted to the tune during the 20th century and have been recorded by numerous individuals and groups. Probably the most familiar of its many versions describes a girl, tells her to go home and promises future matrimony: You ought to see my Cindy She lives way down South And she's so sweet the honey bees All swarm around her mouth. Get along home Cindy, Cindy Get along home Cindy, Cindy Get along home Cindy, Cindy I'll marry you some day. This arrangement for brass quintet is written in cut time with a suggested tempo of about 96 BPM. It opens in G major and, after a 12-measure introduction, introduces the basic melody using mainly Trumpets and Trombone. This is followed by five variations. The first takes form of a gentle, rhythmically soothing near-hymn played by the Horn; the second, sounds like Turkey in the Straw and features Horn and Trumpet 2; the third is a concoction based on The Little Brown Mouse and The Girl I Left Behind played by Tuba; the fourth is Boil Em Cabbage Down by Horn and Trombone; and the fifth is Kingdom Coming by Trumpets 2 and 1. At this point, the key changes to A major, Trumpets play an extended version of the Cindy melody and Horn provides a gigue-like counterpoint. All join in for the finale. Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 3 minutes, 8 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge. He would like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms. Brass Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808709 By Eldridge/Gillespie. By Leo Mosley, Mary Lou Williams, William Luther Johnson, and William Willie Johnson. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Contemporary. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #6433397. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808709).     Mary Lou Williams learned to play piano on her own at age 3. By age 6 she was playing piano to help support her large family. At age 15, she turned professional, and by the time she was 20, she had made a name for herself nationally not only as a jazz musician but also as an arranger and composer. In 1943, she wrote a piece titled Satchel Mouth Baby, which she recorded the next year with her group, Mary Lou and her Chosen Five. Three years later, Bill Johnson and His Musical Notes recorded Williams’ song after he and Leo Snub Mosley had worked on the lyrics and changed the title to Pretty Eyed Baby. Others would go on to record Pretty Eyed Baby, among them: Frankie Laine and Jo Stafford, Jane Turzy, Johnnie Ray, Peggy Lee and Roy Eldridge.    This arrangement skips along at about 120 bpm. It contains common swing rhythmic figures, and all notes are well within the normal playing range of most brass musicians. Horn in F and Trombone carry the melodic load, but all instruments get a turn at playing lead. This is a fun piece, so don’t be surprised if your audience starts clapping along while you’re playing.    Completed in 2021, performance time for Pretty Eyed Baby runs about 3 minutes,9 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the SheetMusicPlus search box.

Full Orchestra - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1091551 Composed by George Gershwin. 20th Century,Classical,Film/TV,Jazz. Score and parts. 253 pages. Szüts Apor #695728. Published by Szüts Apor (A0.1091551). In 1930, George Gershwin, together with his brother Ira, was invited to go to Hollywood to provide the music for the film Delicious. He spent seven weeks on the score only to find that just four songs (Blah, Blah, Blah; Delicious; Katinkitschka; Somebody from Somewhere), a five-minute Dream Sequence and one minute from a six-minute orchestral sequence called New York Rhapsody would be incorporated in the film. When he went back to New York in February 1931, George had decided to use the material from the six-minute sequence to work into a concert piece and had sketched some of it. Some of the material was jettisoned: the Manhattan Rhapsody opens with the main romantic theme in 6/8 time arranged for piano and solo cello. The rest of the film sequence was radically rearranged and rescored. Gershwin completed the fourteen-minute piece by May. The new work was titled Rhapsody in Rivets during his sketching, but later he could not decide between New York Rhapsody and Manhattan Rhapsody. George Gershwin settled on Second Rhapsody.

Small Ensemble Horn,Piano - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.904619 Composed by Rosemary Sugden Waltzer. Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 27 pages. New City Music #6477279. Published by New City Music (A0.904619). This is a new recital piece for horn and piano with some special effects. Journey is a three movement work for horn and piano of approximately 15 minutes in duration. Score is 20 pages. Horn part is 7 pages. It travels from one scene to the next changing in texture, character and range. The first movement begins with acoustical elements of interaction between horn and piano as the horn introduction is interrupted by frequent rests so that the reverberations of the piano with damper pedal pressed can be heard. To hear the introduction on your computer please turn the sound up. The body of the movement features lyrical horn lines with unexpected harmonies with the piano and then scampers to the end. In the whimsical second movement the horn plays a happy-go-lucky tune with a smooth melodic line which is highlighted by a minimalist pattern in the piano with modulations that are often out-of-sync between horn and piano and is true to character until the final cadence.                       The third movement opens with a register of the piano strings temporarily covered by a bead chain which creates a metallic sonority to compliment the timbre of the stopped horn, thus resulting in a machine like effect. Then a heroic theme alternates with a playful dialog between horn and piano, changing moods and meters until the finale when Journey is completed.  This is a fun and challenging piece to show off in a recital.

Cello and piano - intermediate - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q11672 Composed by George Goltermann. This edition: Sheet music. Cello Library. Downloadable. Op. 54/3. Schott Music - Digital #Q11672. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11672). Key: A minor.Goltermann (1824-1898) left a plethora of works for his instrument, including seven cello concertos which sometimes go to the limits of what was considered to be technically playable in his time. Even today, these works have maintained their importance throughout the methodological progress in literature. Apart from the concertos, Goltermann also composed a large number of character pieces, including romances, reveries, nocturnes and serenades. Stylistically wholly rooted in the Romantic spirit of their time, the pieces are relatively short and of medium difficulty as regards the technical demands. It is not least due to their melodic and harmonic catchiness that they enjoy a lasting popularity both in music lessons and in domestic concerts.
