It was premiered on February 14, 2010 by one of the Honor Bands at Morehead State University, Kentucky, with the composer conducting. It is composed as a grade 3 composition to be played by any school band at that level such as junior high or grade 7 & 8. It has no passages that should be difficult for any instrument to play. As in most grade 3 pieces, there is a lot of doubling of instruments, so even if there is not a completely full instrumentation, all voices will be heard.In 2013, Kentuckywas selected as a finalist in Category 1 (Concert band, Grade 1-2.5 Jr. HS) in the 3rdInternational Frank Techeli Composition Contest hosted by Manhattan Beach Music.In 2014 it was one of the featured pieces at the University of North Texas summer conducting workshop. There is a youtube video of the performance by the UNT Wind Symphony Conducted by Nicholas Guiliano. In 2015 an analysis and commentary of Kentuckywas published in the book Teaching Music through Performance in Band Volume 10, GIA Publications. The analysis is by Amy M. Knopps, Associate Director of Bands at Eastern Michigan University.

The Jester was a member of the household of a nobleman or a monarch employed to entertain guests during royal court. Jesters were also traveling performers who entertained common folk at fairs and town markets, and the discipline continues into the modern day, where jesters perform at historical-themed events.This piece is in ternary form. The outer sections are to represent the general clowning around and playing pranks as a mischievous Jester does. The middle section by contrast is more lyrical to demonstrate a softer side to the personality, however this quickly transcends back to the final section where jokes, pranks and laughs have their way! It should be performed very briskly and lightly to capture the overall feel of the piece. The range in total is two and a half octaves and it is 4.00 minutes in length- Set at Intermediate level, but lots of areas are less so. This is the first movement from Shavano Suite, a set of four pieces inspired by folklore and campfire tales from the Mount Shavano/Maysville area in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. The suite was originally scored for classical guitar duet, but this version is expanded to a concerto for classical guitar, string quartet and percussion. The percussion requires a large drum or timpani.  Performance time for the suite is 17 minutes. This movement, however, works well as a stand alone concert piece, with a performance time of 6 minutes. The level of demand for the performers is intermediate to advanced. All through the piece, different string sections play different melodies at the same time.While it is mostly a pizzicato piece there are some bowing sections. It also gives the player a challenge to play pizzicato while holding the bow in certain sections. This is a great piece for your Winter Concert. Approx 6 minutes long.
