That being said, this version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements and we added a few left-hand fills for rhythm. Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.845956). The text to this dramatic, intense song was inspired by the events of the summer of 2020; that said, the trope it addresses goes back for many years. The message is this: no person can be summed up by one emotion, and all have the right to be angry, on occasion. Black women have more reason to be angry than a lot of people, and while we shouldn't be consumed by anger, we shouldn't feel like we can't express it, either. Anger results from hurt or fear; the more lyrical middle section alludes to the pain that we've experienced. The song ends with the defiant question: But what if I were? If you have questions, Raehann Bryce and Jeanne-Minette Cilliers capture this song perfectly in the YouTube video. Monaco and lyrics by Mack Gordon - it was published in 1945. The song was introduced by John Payne and reprised by Betty Grable in the film The Dolly Sisters. I Can't Begin to Tell You was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1946, but lost out to On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe. A version by Bing Crosby was the best-known recording, reaching its peak of popularity in 1945. This version was developed from the original 1945 sheet music and features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements - we hope you like what we've done with this grand old tune!
