Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939403).  American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

At the 35th British Academy Film Awards, the film was nominated in 11 categories and won in three, including Best Film. It is ranked 19th in the British Film Institute's list of Top 100 British films.The film's title was inspired by the line Bring me my Chariot of fire! from the William Blake poem adapted into the British hymn and unofficial English anthem Jerusalem; the hymn is heard at the end of the film.[4] The original phrase chariot(s) of fire is from 2 Kings 2:11 and 6:17 in the Bible.Nicholas Hare's cunning arrangement of the composition inspired me to orchestrate it for a brass quintet, where mostly the tuba plays percussive effects to indicate the tension of the race. This extended through-sung song cycle was composed at the request of the remarkable Turkish-Australian soprano, Ayse Goknur Shanal, to include in a 2015 recital program by her to commemorate the 100th anniversary of origin of ANZAC, being the date Australian & New Zealand armed forces entered into combat in WW1.  The date is focused annually to commemorate those Australians who have served & those who have died in war.For the words I located some striking, even emotional, poems by Leon Gellert who, as a poet & a Lance Sergeant with the 10th Battalion, landed at Gallipoli, Turkey, on 25 April 1915. Wounded by shrapnel, and suffering from septicaemia and dysentery, he was evacuated to Malta in July and thence to London. He was repatriated and discharged medically unfit on 30 June 1916.Gellert created his overseas verse. Songs of a Campaign (1917) which was hailed by the Bulletin as one of the best verse collections to have come out of the war in the English language; it won the Bundey prize for English verse, and, before the year was out, Angus & Robertson Ltd published a third and enlarged edition, illustrated by Norman Lindsay.Ms Shanal premiered These Men in the recital collection curated by her in April 2015.  In 2016 she recorded the complete program to CD. In 2018 & 2019 she gave performances of the program in the Melbourne Recital Centre, Sydney Opera House & other venues throughout eastern Australia & Germany.
