Harald Genzmer (1909–2007) did a lot for young up-and-coming musicians, and there certainly is many a string instrument player who remembers school orchestra times in which the 'Sinfonietta' was programmed. But the probably most prominent Hindemith pupil wrote much more valuable educational music: In the years 1960 to 1996 he created '8 Little Studies for String Orchestra' which are brilliant miniatures of medium difficulty dealing with special musical issues, such as dotted rhythm or change of time. The pieces can either be played separately or be formed into little suites. They are perfect for the work in school, hobby and amateur orchestras. And in spite of all educational intentions: This is enjoyable music which is fun to play!

Skating- From A Charlie Brown Christmas

This is an intermediate string orchestra arrangement for the classic tune “Skating�

The original piece is in C major and this arrangement has been transposed to G major. Some of the turn-around chords which were chromatic I have altered to be diatonic chords for ease of the players given that it is for an intermediate-level group.


The Violin 1 part has the main melody, and pizzicato at the beginning and end. 
The Violin 2 part as normal supports Violin 1 with harmony which is most of the time in thirds just like the original.
The Viola part is the easiest of all the parts mostly playing dotted half notes as well as playing a little pizzicato.
The Cello part has a lot of the color for the chords and the B section has a little counter melody.
The Bass part uses, pizzicato and arco, low F naturals and one Eb, as well as dotted quarter notes for the main theme to match the violins.

It can also be played as a string quintet if desired. If you don't have any violas I will have another version with a “Violin 3� part that is the same as the viola. I hope you enjoy it!

This famous piece is something of a crowd pleaser. It is often indicated to be an intermediate piece, but some versions are a little awkward for a piece at this level.

This arrangement pays attention to left hand fingerings in order to smooth out some clunky sections. Bass notes are done away with in certain sections (with no loss to the musicality of the piece) to make it easier and more consistent. Hopefully this piece flows a little better than some others.

The piece is set out tidily and logically on one page with one set of repeat bar lines. More fingerings are indicated than strictly necessary.

The main tip for playing this piece relates to the unusual 9/8 tempo. Don't let it run away with you - play it solidly with a slowish pulse. That is the biggest challenge of this piece.

Chick Corea died at the age of 69 on February 9, 2021. I have been a huge fan of his music and piano playing since I heard the album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs (1968). Assisted by Miroslav Vitous and Roy Haynes, Chick was in absolutely rare form on that seminal recording!!! As a tribute to him and a in memoriam to his musicianship, I wrote these movements for solo piano inspired by his compositions in the album Children's Songs (1984). Corea's Children's Songs is a suite of twenty solo piano pieces, each lasting between 1 to 2 minutes. These are truly little gems of composition in miniature, like the Chopin Preludes. But every time I hear them I always felt that these nice little pieces, at least to my ears, always came up short. A lot of them seem to end in mid-air. In my humble opinion, they needed development. But that is of course coming from the mouth of a classical composer, me. LOL!!! Nevertheless, in this tribute, I have taken some ideas from the original Corea songs and reinvented them in my own fashion. You will detect a thing or two from Chick, but mostly it's TOL music. Since my songs get development, the entire suite consists of ten movements, rather than Corea's twenty. Enjoy!!! Children's Song No. 1 ... Moderato Children's Song No. 2 ... This album follows the simple story of A Squirrel Named Whiskers. Whiskers is a curious but cautious little squirrel that lives in the woods and enjoys exploring new areas of the woods from time to time when he finishes collecting food for the day. This story follows Whiskers as he ventures out into an unknown part of the woods and happens to stumble across an old abandoned house which is surrounded by trees and bushes. There is no one to be seen or heard here and Whiskers can’t help but explore inside.

I began writing this album with the track “And Carefully Crept Inside.” but I actually wasn’t planning on writing a full album at that point. I go into more detail in the individual track’s program note about it but it was the spark that led me to commit to writing a full album. I began composing other tracks for the music box to be part of the album and then I had an idea to make the titles into a story, but what would they be about? The music box is an enchanting and mysterious little instrument and is often associated with magic, fairies, and the forest which is what led me to decide to write the story about a Squirrel.

I took some time to write out a short story and then created 10 titles that would fit the story. I continued to write the remaining tracks of the album now using the titles as inspiration to write the music which made it easy to create a certain mood and style. Writing this album was a great exercise in writing music that has a story behind it which something I always try to do when composing. I believe that every piece of music has a story behind it intentionally or unintentionally. I plan to continue to infuse a story in the music I write as it gives it much more meaning than a piece of music being written without a story in mind. I hope you enjoy listening to or practicing these pieces and have fun following along with whiskers on his journey into the unknown.

Eine kleine Nachtmusik (Serenade No. 13 for strings in G major), K. 525, is a 1787 composition for a chamber ensemble by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The German title means a little serenade, though it is often rendered more literally as a little night music. The work is written for an ensemble of two violins, viola, cello and double bass, but is often performed by string orchestras.
