Matty Groves is a variant of the English folk song sometimes called Little Musgrave. While the lyrics of the song are rather risqué, dealing with an affair between the local lord's wife and a commoner from the town, the tune is quite lively and fun to listen to. Matty Groves is well attested to in folk song literature going back at least as far as the early 1700s if not earlier. It is most well known now because of the British folk rock group Fairport Convention. This version is arranged by Mark Lewis for mixed clarinet quartet. All four players get a turn with the melody, harmony, and accompaniment parts and the verses are separated by a short interlude with an original melody. The rhythms and fingerings are not too difficult but the melody does cover a fairly large range so it may a challenge for younger players. However, almost all intermediate and even some advanced middle school players should be able to play this fun little piece.

This song is arranged in 4 part close harmony, tranposed for men's (or mixed) voicings, in the barbershop style (internal melody). The arrangement is based on one by Suzy Lobaugh (also available on SMP) and adapted with her kind permission, and in close collaboration with Suzy, by members of the LABBS Music Judging Category to more closely follow the original song's structure, lyric and rhythms. The arrangement is suitable for most male or mixed / SATB barbershop choruses and quartets as a popular choice for audience-friendly performance repertoire. Each voicepart is within the standard barbershop ranges of most arrangements and each verse and chorus is a repeat of the same notes with no changes, aside from what is necessary to accommodate different lyric patterns. Note: if you are unfamiliar with the scoring of male barbershop music, be aware the treble clef should be sung an octave lower than written, as designated by the 8 below the clef.

This arrangement is not suitable for use in barbershop contests.

This song and arrangement would also be a great choice for other genres of male and mixed choirs and a cappella quartets or ensembles, including high school / college / secondary school choirs wanting to try the barbershop style. It is a classic song known to all generations, with a great message of support and friendship.

‘AsCent’ is the culmination of a number of ideas and experiences, first of which was the need to compose exciting and challenging music for the classroom. This piece attempts to put the Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3 budding musician into the musical world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or other similar big budget sci-fi action adventure films. Combining motor ostinati with contextually more adventurous accompanying harmony my aim is to move the musical learning away from the sometimes twee and undemanding into something with a little more musical bite.

This orchestration of the piece includes parts for what I have come to know as a ‘mixed ability school ensemble’ i.e. a selection of instruments that you might typically find being taught in high schools both in London and nationally. The idea behind this was to put primary school musicians alongside older (sometimes as much as 10 years older) musicians from high schools to act both as inspiration and role models. 'AsCent’ for mixed ability school ensemble was first performed on Saturday 1st July 2017 by 76 musicians including 34 primary school children from the London Borough of Brent under the baton of the composer.

Version for double choir (mixed voices) SAT-SAT This setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis (called Canticula Ursae Minoris - songs of a little bear) is based on my oratorio in which I set a chapter of Winnie the Pooh (Now we are six - The Expotition to the North Pole). The tunes are and light and playful but the complexity makes it suited to a Cathedral or Church setting. The oratorio itself (The Poohratorio, composed in 1977) has not yet been published here due to copyright on the works of A A Milne, but the melodies are entirely mine. You may be able to guess some of the characters whose leitmotifs in the oratorio are used in this setting. In particular, the lesser doxology (Glory be to the Father) makes great use the theme of Eeyore, the complaining donkey. The sound sample is performed by Matthew Curtis of choraltracks.com.

Matthew Camidge (1758-1844) was a well-known local musician of Northern England, famous for his organ compositions, playing and conducting oratorios.

This arrangement of one of his compositions, the Gavotte in A minor taken from the solo in his concerto for organ - It is scored as a Mixed Woodwind Trio with an extra added repeated section.

It can be played by an expanded Woodwind Group (Flutes, Clarinets, Oboes, Saxes, Horn and a Bassoon) playing the three parts as in the attached recording…or you can use as little 3 parts eg. Clarinet, Horn, and Bassoon.

Worthing U3A’s Inspired Instrumentalists was formed in 2015 with just 6 members, all mixed ability and wanting to make music together. They now have 36 members, still a very mixed ability group, and includes instruments which are not found in the normal orchestra so arrangements have to be made for them. Since March 2020 they have been in Lockdown and unable to meet. It was agreed that they would continue to make music through a form of distanced learning. They receive an arrangement from me to work on and are given a date to submit their audio file which is then collated into a whole piece for all of them to listen to. This is one of the arrangements they have worked on.

A Little Jazz provides a medium level jazz experience that concert and marching bands will revel in preparing and performing. Set in a mixed jazz style of swing and Preservation Hall, intermediate to experienced bands, both elementary and high school levels will enjoy the experience of performing this work. A Little Jazz is very adaptable for the marching band as a dance-line or majorette feature selection. Inspired by a professional jazz band leader from the 1940's and his relative, the composer wrote this jazz work in honor of the Kingsway College Philharmonic Wind Ensemble, in Oshawa, Ontario Canada. By doing so, the ensemble was provided with instruction in jazz ensemble, providing them with fulfilling the Provincial requirement in this vein. A Little Jazz is sure to be a favorite of any concert or marching band.
