Instrumental Duet Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869254 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Baroque,Classical,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 5 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #32677. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869254). When the Reed sisters, Elizabeth & Lydia, asked me to write a new work for two pianos, I wasn't quite sure where or how to begin. Then I came upon a book on numerology by Annemarie Schimmel, The Mystery of Numbers. In it I discovered a lot of fascinating things, mystical and magical, associated with each number from one to 10,000. Since I would be writing a piece for a duo, double digits would do the trick. Number 22 stood out. It has two important associations: the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and there are 22 major arcana cards or allegories of the Tarot. Perfect! I could write 22 pieces, each a musical rendering of a card.  And, coincidentally, this work will opus 66.For pictorial inspiration, I bought a Pierpont Morgan Library copy of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards from 15th century Italy. For musical inspiration, I listened to the wonderful salon music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and the Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth. The 22 pieces in the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards are: Zero Il Matto The Fool entertains the gathered guests with a tarantella. I. Il Saltimbanco The Mountebank shuffles his cards and does a samba. II. La Papessa The High Priestess concocts a magic potion. III. L'Imperatrice The Empress dances all night. IV. L'Imperatore The Emperor promenades into the Great Hall and inspects the courtiers. V. Il Papa The Pope makes a proclamation that all sinners will be pardoned. VI. L'Amore Love in a tropical paradise. VII. Il Carro Triumphant in battle, the gladiators ride into town on chariots. VIII. La Giustizia Justice is swift and unrelenting. IX. Il Vecchio The Old Man reminisces. X. La Ruota della Fortuna Fortunes rise and fall unpredictably. XI. La Fortezza Strength and fortitude will prevail. XII. Il Penduto Lamentation for the Hanged Man. XIII. Il Morte Death lurks around the corner. XIV. La Temperanza Temperance in A major. XV. Il Diavolo The Devil seduces with his charm and wit. XVI. La Torre The tower topples and crashes onto the populace gathered below. XVII. La Stella Twinkle, twinkle, little star ... XVIII. La Luna Minuet for moonstruck lovers. XIX Il Sole Sunshine, margaritas and salsa cubana. XX Il Giudizio On the Day of Judgment, the angels blow their trumpets ... XXI. Il Mondo The world would be a happier place if we all dance together. Performance option: Shuffle the 22 allegory cards from the Tarot deck to determine the order of performance.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quartet Clarinet - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.891900 Composed by Dr.Benjamin Robert Papperitz. Arranged by Stephen Davies. Romantic Period. 15 pages. Stephen Davies #3470572. Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891900). The calm and simplistic opening to this piece gives it its charm, as the close harmonies open up to give any competent group an excercise in restraint. In addition, one of the most difficult things in music is to place staccato notes right on the beat, together, at a slow tempo! A good example of this is 'L'il Darlin' by Basie/Hefti, lots of bands have trouble with the 2 staccato crotchets in the main tune, placing them just so is tricky! Now, this is certainly not jazz, but the principle is the same. Dr.B.R.Papperitz was professor of harmony at the Leipzig Conservetoire from 1851-1868 and was a major influence on the composers of his time, other than that I know very little!

Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767273 Composed by Claudio Monteverdi. Arranged by Mike Lyons. Baroque,Renaissance. Score and parts. 16 pages. Lyons Music Services #3218683. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767273). As part of my continuing project to transcribe Monteverdi's madrigals onto winds, here is the 6th book. In this book we see a much greater development towards dramatic representation. In a way, this book is divisible into two Scenes with a number of single items in between. The vocal lines are all much more complex and we can also see the beginnings of monodic writing appear in the semi-recit sections of some of the songs. Also clearly developing are delineations of the voices into soloists and chorus. Several songs in this book are almost akin to arias, with clear soloistic writing for the higher voices (Cantus/Tenor). The first four songs form a kind of introductory 'scena', which Monteverdi calls Lamento d'Arianna. A little later, there is a set of 6 songs which he grouped together under the title Sestina. The final song from Lamento d'Arianna tanslates as Ah! Who does not even answer! Ah! Who is deaf to my laments (pleas) Another song of a young man being turned down by his lover. As with all things madrigalian, the lyrics are rife with double entendres. Monteverdi uses some very close dissonances to describe death and release.

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.767578 Composed by Mike Lyons. Contemporary. Score and parts. 81 pages. Lyons Music Services #6422239. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767578). These three pieces form a small suite, linked by the idea of ‘pastoral’ or rustic situations and places.   The first piece to be written now forms the middle movement, though at first it was the starting point.   This is not easy music. It travels through several keys with large numbers of sharps and flats and in places the time signature shifts constantly. The first movement is modal, being based on the mixolydian and dorian modes. I took for this movement the idea of ancient Celts celebrating a victory and dancing and getting drunk around a smoky fire. Their chieftain strikes up a song, accompanied by a double drone.   This melody is initially stated on the horn, with just two other instruments providing the accompaniment. At 4 before B, the remaining instruments join in, providing a rhythmic pulse and the melody moves to the Euphonium/Baritone/Trombone. Subtle variations shape the melody anew, leading to letter C. Here the complex overlapping rhythms provide a more dance-like feel to the music. Also, countermelodies start to appear which build the excitement.   At letter E, the music becomes louder and the rhythmic pulse more insistent (perhaps they are dancing on the tables?) The mode changes to the more major sounding mixolydian. But from here on in, the revellers are starting to wend their way home, still singing and dancing and they gradually fade into the distance. At letter G, we’re back to three players, but with the trumpet 1 playing a rhythmic melody over the top of the original tune.   The second movement is called The Aesthetes. The aesthetic movement was formed in the 19th century, but had been around before that in less formal garb. Their ideal was to emulate the Ancient Greeks and Romans – or at least their perception of what the ancients were like as found in statues, paintings and friezes. They adopted studied poses and were very effete in their mannerisms. Gilbert and Sullivan parodied the aesthetic movement in their operettas – particularly Princess Ida (but also in the Mikado and various others).   So, here is a movement with classical lines in the style of a minuet, but in 6/8 rather than ¾ so that it can be more languid. All the melodies are ‘studied’ and ‘formal’ with long, languid notes and rhythms which don’t quite fit to the beat as the aesthetes pose and ponder and languidly look, studied and pale and wan.   Because of the long notes in the melody, there’s an almost dream-like quality to the music as if they are seeing through a haze of Wormwood or Absinthe (a favourite drink of the aesthetes when they weren’t high on themselves or opiates).   The third and final movement is called The Bohemians. This was also a movement at the end of the 19th Century. Where the aesthetes were ruled by rules, the Bohemians lived by none. They were considered wild and unconventional to say the least.   The Bohemians movement owed much to the supposed free life and style of the gypsies and wanderers of Europe. Our piece starts with a gypsy violin style opening, including a cadenza, and then moves into the rapidly time shifting and gyrating gypsy dance.   This section is in alternating bars of 5/8 and 6/8 with occasional 11/8 thrown in to keep you off balance. The frantic and frenetic movement continues up to letter F where things calm down a little – but not for long as the intensity increases again from Letter H to the quite sudden ending.   This is tuneful yet challenging music which will take a lot of effort, but which will give a lot back in return.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1354717 Composed by Gene De Paul and Johnny Mercer. Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson (aka Martycli Piano Guy). 20th Century,Contemporary,Film/TV,Jazz,Ragtime. Score. 8 pages. Martyn Johnson #939414. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1354717). This is an up tempo Stride piano version of Namely You. The song comes from the musical and film 'Li'l Abner' a spoof about hillbillies. It was written in 1956. I take the tune through the 3 keys of Bb, B and C major. The left hand is sometimes a little bit tricky in Stride piano but the tenths can be played in single notes or octaves or can be 'rolled' if the hands are not large enough.I don't include fingering or dynamics in my pieces and prefer to leave these up to the individual pianist as no two piano teachers ever agree on these things. I do include chord symbols as I find these the most useful in learning and memorising music. Many people have recorded this tune including Diana Dors, Carmen Macrae, Sonny Rollins, Fred Hersch etc. It is, though, perhaps less well known than other jazz standards but is nontheless a wonderfully melodic tune. Hope you enjoy my version.
