His hobbies are Minecraft, Lego, Ninjago, Chima, How to be a Ninja, and Pokemon. Lucas has two favorite chords: F# major and minor, and he likes to play both hands together. He also likes to play fast, and to have dynamics like forte-piano-forte. This piece is built on F# major and minor, with added diminished. This is part of a collaboration between composers and students. It is a project of the Oregon Music Teachers Association and the Cascadia Composers chapter of NACUSA (National Association of Composers USA). The annual concert, titled In Good Hands, features original compositions that are chosen by OMTA teachers for their students. In 2021, the project includes individualized collaboration where composers wrote for specific students. The composers met with the students, and together they decided on a composition written according to the requests of the student.

He also likes science, drawing, technology, and travel - especially flying. He would like to be a pilot someday. Brian requested a fast piece, not too long, tonal, in the key of G - kind of like Clementi. This is part of a collaboration between composers and students. Nina requested a Nocturne in the Phrygian mode that would resemble the style of Chopin. Her favorite composer is Chopin, and loves his nocturnes. She has written a poem about Chopin. Nina began her first year of college during the pandemic, and is consequently a virtual student. Her major is Bio-Engineering. During high school, she has accompanied choirs and solo- ensemble festivals, participated in many solo piano events, and completed all the requirements of the OMTA syllabus. Because she is attending college virtually and is living with her family locally, she continues to study piano with her long-time OMTA piano teacher. Nina also has earned a black belt in Karate; and she likes skiing and fashion. The piece is part of a collaboration between composers and students. Using letters and finger numbers, and advancing through several positions, students work through the challenge to enjoy playing and singing the songs! They love sharing them with family and friends! The songs can be adapted to many teaching styles and method books. The positions range from middle C position, C position, and a variety of positions to accommodate the melody of each song. Words have been added to help the student adapt rhythm to the way the words are sung. Flexible rhythm gives hints to the student of what is to come in future lessons, and teachers can adapt them accordingly. Eighth notes are used in some instances where the feel of the rhythm dictates, making them a necessity. PDX for piano solo is a set of four pieces portraying part of the vastly varied life in the city of Portland, Oregon -- PDX (its airport acronym) -- The City of Roses, Bridgetown, Rip City-- known for all-inclusive creativity in the arts and music, cultural diversity and independence, as well as community unity and tolerance. Located on the Columbia River, it has varied climates, homes built on the water, beautiful views, and a landscape of rolling hills in the beautiful state of Oregon. The music is an adaption of four of the pieces in Mood Suite by the same composer, which has been enjoyed by students, teachers, and professional pianists! The set is comprised of teaching pieces, each in its own scale and composition style, and has been descriptive of a variety of interpretations, names changes, and events that are portrayed by the music. See each piece for detailed analysis. PDX transforms four of the pieces to depict: The Banfield (Portland’s first freeway); Fog, Rain, Wind (its changing climate); Pioneer Square (a favorite spot used for a vast variety of events); and Tilikum Crossing (the new land bridge which is laden with fun). NOTE: The recordings are:PDX for Solo Piano, live performance of three of the pieces. Pioneer Square is an Mp3 of music software (although it has been performed often, there is no live recording) and can be obtained free from the composer.

Mixolydian Sonatina is a fun piano solo based on the Mixolydian mode with hints of Western harmonic structure.  The three movements each have different qualities, but are unified by harmonic and rhythmic motifs.  Each movement offers its own fun and some surprises!  Composer notes give suggestions for students to become familiar with the structure and sound of the mode. An mp3 of the first movement is included; however, mp3s of the other two movements are available at no charge from the composer.  A recent commission, the Sonatina was premiered 4/24/21.  Have fun with this unique sonatina!

The ionian mode is a major scale. Ionian Festival is based on an old-time barn dance, with a hoe-down sound of open fifths. The melody interchanges between Primo and Secondo. Mood Suite  is a set of five piano solos depicting moods that we all experience: Restless, Peaceful, Mood Swings (Monkey Thoughts), Anger, Fun (Dance-Crazy Waltz).  The set began as a commission for the Billings (MT) Music Teachers Association (1986) and has been used in several variations for specific events; some have changed titles, but all remain the same music. All have been enjoyed by students, teachers, and professional pianists!  The set is comprised of teaching pieces, each in its own scale and style. The title changes have been influenced by the purpose of the event (i.e. see PDX), as well as nicknames by students or performers; (i.e. Mood Swings became Monkey Thoughts; Fun became Dance and then Crazy Waltz).  Have fun with these pieces!  Interpret them to fit your own moods!  NOTE: The recording is a live performance of Restless, Peaceful, Crazy Waltz, used in the concert for PDX.  Mood Swings and Anger recordings can be obtained at no charge from the composer.  Also Note: some pieces are sold separately.

Variations on the Pentatonic; One Piano Four Hands.  Using several pentatonic scales, the three movements (two are short, one is long) of this piece have many moods, as the title implies!  l. Melody on the Miyako-bushi  is slow and dreamy (altho, some pianists like to play it fast and dreamy).2.The Chase on the Man Gong is fast, as the primo and secondo chase each other!  3. Variations on the Blues Minor is the longest movement and has a lot going on with tempo changes, running up and town the piano, displacing accents, a dreamy Adagio, Allegro contrasts; and rhythmic motives and jazz harmonies get tossed back and forth in Primo and Secondo.This was a commission for the WSMTA Composer of the Year 2014; and it has a counterpart: the piano solo written for the Intermediate composers of WSMTA, which is listed elsewhere in this catalog.Have fun with this piece!  -- while you learn about pentatonic scales in a very different way!

The chord and melody are transposes, and inside piano patters are added as options (which can be played on the keys instead.) This piece is from the Five Short Pieces for Piano.
