The accompaniment can be played on piano or organ (organ preferred) and is written in Baroque-style four parts which are distinct from the solo part. The melody uses the descending-second sighing technique to indicate the strong emotions of questioning and pleading with God. This would be a very effective solo or unison choir piece for Tenebrae or Good Friday.

Clarke's impressive setting of Carnival of Venice remains the most frequently performed version of the theme and variations cornet solo first made famous by Arban. To contrast the cornet soloist's pyrotechnics is a humorous trombone and tuba accompaniment that enlivens the listening experience. A flugelhorn/trumpet alternate part is provided for the horn part.
