The Muskrat Waltz is inspired by the muskrats that were dancing in my pond behind my home yesterday.  This piece is written for late beginner/early elementary students.  It is a great introduction to waltz time, teaching students to really feel the waltz beat.  With the melody in the bass, it is a wonderful piece to showcase the left hand.  The melody is catchy, with an unexpected E flat near the end to catch the audience's ear.  Students will love this piece, recreating the dance of the muskrats.  This piece was written in C position, but uses a B flat and an E flat to enhance the melody in a couple of spots.  The font is larger for easy reading, with some colour added.  Fingering has not been added to this piece as I felt this would also be a great piece for the student to work with the teacher to figure out fingering, using their knowledge of fingering they have learned so far.

This beginner song was inspired by the peepers (little frogs) singing one spring night.  Written in G position in the bass clef, the right hand plays the frog sound, F# and G played together.  I always call these frog's eyes because they remind me of frog's eyes.  This song is actually a game.  Each measure has a different colour of frog in it.  I use bingo chips, but anything with matching colours would work.  Put them in a bag, pulling one at a time.  The student has to play whatever colour is pulled.  They should do this 4-5 times for each colour.  Then play the song through twice.  They repeat this for each practice session.  This is a game that I use frequently with my younger students as it teaches them to break their practice into smaller segments and they have fun while they practice.

Frogs in the Pond is a fun song to play and learn, and was inspired by the peepers singing in my own pond.  It has sounds that imitate frogs croaking, hopping up and down the keyboard using hand crossovers and has a section where the frogs are swimming.  It is written with late beginners students in mind.   Large font with bright colours are used.  Fun lyrics are included so students can sing along.  This piece would be great for recitals or music festivals.   .

This beginner piano piece is the shortened version of the song C D E Just for Me.  It is designed to introduce the youngest beginner students to their first three notes on the treble staff using the Middle C position.  This should be the first song that they learn from my instructional songs.  Using large font with bright colours, lyrics and fingering, new beginners will easily learn this song.  It uses quarter and half notes for the rhythms for easy reading.  If a student needs more assistance distinguishing between the notes on the staff, I will highlight each note head a different colour depending on the pitch.For older beginner students, I recommend using the full version of the song C D E Just for Me instead.  It is also available for purchase. .

This activity page is a great review of the notes on the staff.  The students create their own colour legend to use, then colour each note accordingly.  Suitable for all ages.Teaching tip:  When I use this, I assign a few notes at a time for them to colour.  As they learn a new note, they colour it on their sheet.
