It was internationally popularized by Los Panchos, who collaborated on their rendition with Eydie Gormé in 1964.[1] Among the over 300 songs that he created, this song was considered Carrillo's biggest hit both in Mexico and internationally.[2] Since its creation, the song has been covered by several artists, including among them Mexican singer Luis Miguel, Cuban jazz pianist Bebo Valdes, k-pop boygroup EXO, and the Mexican American musicians Los Lobos.

It was there when I first first heard his Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, with soprano solo and eight cellos. The memory of that music will forever haunt me. I then recently discovered through a CD box set recorded by the Cuarteto Latinoamericano that Villa-Lobos wrote 17 string quartets. I guess he wanted to beat the number of string quartets that Beethoven wrote which is 16. So this being my 17th string quartet I wanted to pay homage to Villa-Lobos and dedicate this work to him, in memoriam. I took his first string quartet as a model, in terms of the titles he gave to the movements of that work. I. Cantilena … Andante II. Brincadeira … Allegretto scherzando III. La Bamba is a Mexican folk song, originally from the state of Veracruz, best known from a 1958 adaptation by Ritchie Valens, a Top 40 hit in the U.S. charts.
