So many childhood memories of Dad revolved around water-summer vacations spent with my family camping by a mountain stream, fishing in a lake and outings to ocean beaches near my childhood home in Southern California. This programmatic work is in three movements. A Cool Mountain Stream utilizes the pentatonic scale to depict a stream as it meanders along, frequently bouncing over rocks and sometimes heading down a slope, eventually ending in a small waterfall that empties into a deep pool. During a summer vacation, my family camped by a stream that was a natural waterslide. We spent many happy hours sliding down the waterslide into the pool below.A Quiet Morning on the Lake uses the repetitive rocking motion of the piano to represent the soothing motion of the rowboat as I spent summer vacations fishing for trout with my dad on a quiet lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.Frolic in the Surf brings out the playfulness felt at the ocean beach, while getting used to the water temperature and trying to predict when the waves will hit the shore. Many summer days were spent on Southern California beaches with family and friends, body surfing, tanning and simply playing in the waves. Written originally by Norman Span AKA King of the Radio, Harry Belafonte made the Calypso song ' Matilda' famous and Rt Honourable Dr Louise Bennett Coverley OM OJ MBE known affectionately as Miss Lou went on to adapt the tune as a children's Happy Birthday song for her childrens programmes.I actually played with her as a teenager on her children's programme, Ring Ding, which aired on JBCin the 1070's. I had the honour and pleasure of playing this and other songs with her a few times as Marjorie Whylie, her usual pianist, had broken her wrist (my mothere even looked after her at the University Hospital - small world Kingston !).  I remember her taking me under her wing and I even had a chance to visit her in her lovely home in Gordon Town, St Andrew. She left an indelible mark on me.  Now I have a chance to write,arrange and record my favourite pieces from her repertoire.  I have sung this to children in primary schools in South London.  I have tried to retain but update the calyspo feel in the bass clef and my producer Jaja Wray has enhanced this with his percussion and drum patterns and other fills. This track will be released in April 2024.

Shadowlands:  A JourneyBy Phyllis Avidan Louke, ASCAP PROGRAM NOTES:Shadowlands:  A Journey is a programmatic work in three movements for Flute Choir written in memory of the composer’s uncle who died from cancer.  Movement One (Out of the Darkness), written in a minor key, contains a plaintive melody conveying sadness which later transforms to hope.  Movement Two (Into the Shadows) begins with a beautiful bass and alto flute duet written in quartal harmony.  The melody is introspective, yet, in conjunction with syncopated chords by 4ths, keeps moving the listener forward toward a climax of resignation.  Movement Three (Moving Toward the Light), written in a major key, conveys a feeling of hope and peace, ends with a touching chorale which extensively utilizes chords with added seconds. In keeping with that idea, this work consists of two distinct pieces, the first - Transfigured Life - aims to draw in the listener with its quick, dancing rhythm and simple, melodic violin part. It 'transfigures' via a few short solo piano interludes into just two alternating notes to end - which are the core of the original idea, now made clear by clearing everything else out of the way.The second piece - Still Life - retains its sense of stillness through an uncomplicated piano line that gives lots of space for the violin's contrasting (but again simple) part. As an absolute, not programmatic, piece the title refers to the atmospheric colour and pacing only; it's up to the listener to see 'Still life' of their choosing in their own mind.A note on performance: Despite my reference to 'simple' lines, and the work's determined avoidance of mainstream modernist squeak - the work has certain performance challenges of phrasing and ensemble that requires considerable skill and musicianship. Quickly, it becomes darker, as the clouds and thunder emerge (down came the rain and washed the spider out). After the period of darkness and melancholy, the song's key gets brighter and brighter, symbolizing the clouds slowly dissipating and sunlight emerging (out came the sun and dried up all the rain). The song ends joyously (and the itsy bitsy spider climbed out the spout again), celebrating the spider's survival of the perilous weather. Fantasy on Itsy Bitsy Spider has the following instrumentation: Flue/Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbal.
