The title The Cascades refers to a particular feature built for the Fair, a waterfall which cascaded down in multiple tiers and which was floodlit at night. The cover of one of the sheet music editions published in 1904 shows a picture of the attraction with boats on the lake in front of the cascades. The rag's tempo indication is Tempo di Marcia or march-time Arranged here for symphonic wind dectet/bass.

The popular Christmas song, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, was originally written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane for the 1944 Christmas musical film, Meet Me in St. Louis. In the film, Judy Garland’s character sings the song, comforting her younger sister. However, the original lyrics had a depressing tone: Have yourself a merry little Christmas, It may be your last, Next year we may all be living in the past. At Garland’s request, the lyrics were changed to reflect a more positive character. Since the Judy Garland version of the song, other singers such as Frank Sinatra have tweaked the lyrics even more to make the song more uplifting.
