Jesus Christ the Apple Tree is the commonly used title for a poem published under the heading Christ compared to an Apple-tree in the August 1761 issue of The Spiritual Magazine, a London periodical for Calvinist Baptists.Above the poem in the publication are words of its author:Gentlemen,Having spent some of my vacant time in the composition of short pieces of Divine Poetry, have sent you the following, by way of specimen; which, if thought worthy of a place in your magazine, shall communicate the others regularly. I am your well-wisher and constant reader, R.H.R.H. is today believed to most likely be the Rev. Richard Hutchins, a Calvinist Baptist clergyman then serving in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire. The poem's first known appearance in a hymnal, and in America, was in 1784 in Divine Hymns, or Spiritual Songs: for the use of Religious Assemblies and Private Christians compiled by Joshua Smith, a lay Baptist minister from New Hampshire. Because of its popularity in New England churches thereafter, it has often been wrongly attributed to an anonymous early American poet or to Smith.The poem may be an allusion to the apple tree in Song of Solomon 2:3 (As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste), which has been interpreted as a metaphor for Jesus. Brown (A0.1030831). This piece celebrates the life and mourns the loss of my granddaughter, Paisley Gladys Hogan, who was but 2 months old when she was called to Heaven. These are the words I wrote just before her funeral.... I. The Presence - She was here. I held her the day she was born. I held her and watched her smile at me less than 24 hours before she departed. She only knew love. No one around her ever showed her anything else that humanity had to offer; like hatred, heartache, pain, control, or anger. II. The Shock - She feels a Hand beckon her to leave her mortal coil, and she enters into a world we cannot yet reach.. With no one home, her former body ceases to wake. The unimaginable has happened and we struggle to reverse it. Finally, it becomes clear that we cannot. She sees us cry and she wonders what is happening. Having never known sorrow, she only sees that love didn't cause this response. She wants to comfort us with the love she knows, but we do not yet sense it. III. The Questions - One word has confounded mankind from its creation; Why? We have never found an acceptable answer. We ask, Why did this happen? and What did I do? and What didn't we do right? and Why couldn't it have been me? among others. We only know that her absence has carved holes in our hearts shaped like her. She tries to tell us, You can still love me. I just cannot be seen by you now. It does not mean your love cannot make me happy. I still want it. I still feel it. Please feel my love for you. IV. Letting Go - The day comes to bid farewell to the vehicle by which she came to us. We struggle to cope that we will see her face no more except in pictures. Because of the brevity of her life, memories are few to relive, but to do so is to recall happiness. In sorrow, we return her to the earth. All that is left is to return to recall, to talk to her, to bring flowers and other gifts, and to await the day we follow her. V. Remembering - The days and years follow. Normalcy slowly sets back into our lives. The holes in our hearts will never fully heal. But the salve of her love and her memory help to soothe the ache. We still return to where we placed her mortal home, where we laugh and cry in tandem, where our hearts ache to fill the void left by her departure. It will never really get better, but it will become easier for her love to dull the sting of her absence. VI. The Reunion - One by one, we will feel the same Hand bid us to come. The same events will befall those left behind each time. One by one, she will greet us as we reunite with her. We marvel at how she has stayed with us as we stay to comfort those we had just bidden farewell. The rest cannot be imagined by we that remain..........

Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I'm dedicating this piece to the cats in my adult life since I met my wife, Becky. They each have a special place in my heart, and this piece is a tribute to them. The first movement describes the pain I felt when losing Cuddles and Chloe. The second movement describes the joy, love, and playfulness they all bring while on this Earth. The piece is also meant to be somewhat educational in nature and is a great tool for an intermediate player to learn expressiveness and somewhat more advanced techniques of music-making.

I was recently invited to a farewell cocktail party for Robert Levin and Ya Fei Chuang on the occasion of their move from Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Salzburg where Ya Fei got a job teaching at the Mozarteum. John Harbison wrote a little piano duet for them, and it inspired me to looking into writing a grand duo for two pianos. Looking around, I discovered that Charles-Valentin Alkan (1813-1888) wrote a work with the title, Grand Duo Concertant for violin and piano. I immediately launched into a search for Alkan the composer and I discovered that he was a contemporary of Chopin, Franz Liszt, George Sand, and Victor Hugo. Like Liszt and Chopin, he wrote tons of music for the piano, and he was at the cusp of fame when he withdrew from society and remained a recluse for the last years of his life.Aside from the Grand Duo Concertant, I found his 49 Ésquisses to be especially lovely and beguiling. My work for two pianos is based on ideas from both works. I especially thought the beginning of the GDC fascinating because the LH sounded like a walking jazz bass line. That got me started on the Prelude, and then I organized the remaining movements of the work around the GDC with materials I found attractive in the 49 ésquisses.I. Prélude ... Assez animéII.
