Performance Notes: Choose the waltz tempo of your choice - very relaxed to very lilting in 1.  Base your choice on being able to deliver the lyrics with great clarity, especially in the faster passages. Be sure to observe the accelerandos, broadening tempos, a tempos, legatos, and staccatos. They all have much to do with delivering the style of this piece, especially the off beat la-las. Some pairs are staccato, in other pairs, the first la is legato, the second la is staccato.I originally composed this piece as a little warm up ditty for the chorus, but as I worked the melody and the harmony, it  grew into just a little bit more than a warm up exercise.. Published by Derek Larson (A0.1011390). This is one of my favorite texts and compositions to date. The rich text evokes a man wandering the mists as he yearns for his distant love. At times depicting the night, the shifting fog, or the eventual appearance of the bright stars, the music presses onward and upward to a brilliant climax and peaceful resolution. The parts are very singable but they explore the full range of each voice and there is one chord that contains a 16-part split. Choirs will love to sing this and it is sure to be a choir and audience favorite.

The arrangement of this classic jazz/blues/cabaret song is based on the earliest (1937) of (at least?) three recordings by the late, great Billie Holliday, and is closer in feel to the original French version, as sung by cabaret and movie star, Mistinguett. Of course, the most famous version (and most closely associated with Holliday) is the one recorded by Billie in the '50s; but, I like to think that this uptempo version is a truer reflection of this great singer - in happier times - when she loved to sing uptempo jazz (she never regarded herself as a blues singer, although she could sing the blues with the best of them! And, it's important to reflect that her most famous interpretation of this song was made when she was - tragically - at death's door, and blues was better suited to her mood, and a deeply-felt despair, at this time of her all too brief, and, ultimately tragic, life). Besides, the uptempo rhythms, I feel, lend the words more of a 'Brechtian' sense of irony and impact.
