Composed by Robert Lehman. Magnificat/Nunc Dimittis, Annunciation, 21st Century. Octavo. 20 pages. Duration 6 minutes, 15 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8252-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8252-E).

UPC: 600313482526. English. Luke 1:46-55; Luke 2:29-32.

There is a strong and enduring relationship that has been forged between the Roman Catholic Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary and St. Louis, and the Episcopal Church of St. Michael & St. George in St. Louis, Missouri. Each season, the monks visit and sing Vespers at the church and, in turn, the Choir of the Church of St. Michael & St. George travels to the Abbey to sing Evensong. This setting of the evening canticles was composed for one such visit. The stunning acoustics of the Abbey Church are captured fully by the its slow harmonic motion and expansive writing.
Duration: 6:15.

SKU: A0.998831

Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Contemporary,Jazz,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score. 7 pages. Robert A. Howard #6129249. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998831).

This is a lively, singable and catchy setting of the traditional words used at Choral Evensong. The piece features much syncopation in the jazz-like Magnificat, with its repetitive, minimalist accompaniment figures. Meanwhile, the hypnotic Nunc Dimittis repeats its key phrase several times, with increasing dynamics. Both movements end in the customary manner with the Gloria, which is based on the Magnificat's opening. The text is in English, adapted from Luke 1: 46-55 and Luke 2: 29-32. This work is appropriate for most standards of soloist or unison choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs. The accompaniment is for organ but can be adapted by a good pianist. The SATB version of the work is also available via Sheet Music Plus. The Gloria alone, in various versions, is available via SMP as 'Gloria Patri'.

Composed by Todd Marchand. Christian,Sacred,Traditional. 16 pages. Con Spirito Music #933976. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1349231).

Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups.

Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Lightâ€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn†and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.

Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.†The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer.

Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of redemption of the firstborn son, Simeon takes the child into his arms and says “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace ... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.†The Nunc Dimittis is said or sung after the second lesson in evening prayer.

Texts for these settings are from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Traditional Language Edition, according to the use of the Anglican Church in North America, and they are largely the texts of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.

Latin.

This Ave Maria is an arrangement made by Bertold Hummel in December 1997 of his motet Gegrüßet seist du, Maria [Hail Maria] (C 53714) which he had composed on 20 May 1993 with a dedication in memory of his deeply religioues sister Erika. This Latin version was dedicated to the Cathedral Music Master Siegfried Koesler in Berold Hummel also co-founded the Bruckner Festival in Würzburg together with Koesler and Erwin Horn, a specialist in the opening section of their sorks and Bertold Humme quotes Bruckner's final cadence on the name of Jesus prios to the Amen. The text of the so-called Angelic Salutaion is based on the Bible passages from the Gospel of St Luke (luke 1, 28b, 42) which was extended over the centuries with additions such as Jesus (14th century) and the Invocation to Mary. This text was included in the Breviary of Pope Pius V in 1568 which officially confirmed its status as a prayer.
