This song is public domain, written in the 1850's, during a time - pre-civil war - when the nation was being torn apart. The writer calms his anxiety by holding on to God's promises. Here are some lyric notes:   I am a poor, wayfaring stranger -  Wayfaring: traveling especially on foot; peripatetic country preachers; a poor wayfaring stranger.   Wandering through this world of woe -  Matthew 18:7: Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin!  Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!
 And there's no sickness, toil or danger -  John 11:4: When he heard this, Jesus said, This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it.   Ecclesiastes 2:18-19: I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.  Acts 14:22: strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,  In that bright land to which I go -  James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
I'm going home to see my Father -  John 6:40 -  For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.   I'm only going over Jordan -  Joshua 22:4:  Now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as he promised, return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD  gave you on the other side of the Jordan.   Yet though dark clouds will gather round me -  2 Corinthians 12:10: That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak,  then I am strong.   I know my way is rough and steep -  Psalm 16:11: You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.   Proverbs 15:24:  The path of life leads upward for the wise to keep him from going down to the grave.
But beauteous fields lie just before me -  Numbers 13:25: We arrived in the land you sent us to see, and it is indeed a magnificient country, a land flowing with milk and honey.   Where God's redeemed their vigil's keep - Exodus12:42:  Because the LORD kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the LORD  for the generations to come.  I'm going home to see my mother -  Mark 10:29-31: I tell you the truth, Jesus replied, no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me  and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age (homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields-and with them, persecutions.

In Miguel de Cervantes’ masterpiece, chapter X of the first Book, Don Quixote de la Mancha speaks to Sancho Panza about a magical medicine, the balm of Fierabras, “It is taken and people are spared from being afraid of dying or getting hurt�. This fearlessness becomes a ritual that permeates the intrepid adventures of the ill-fated knight of the sad figure.
The structure and entire organisation of the work is based on the complexes [7 (3, 2, 2), 2, 9 (2, 3, 2, 2)] and [5 (2, 3), 8 (2, 2, 4)].

This arrangement of Back to Life  from Bumblebee the 2018 Original Motion Picture is written for piano and solo voice. However, there are also harmony parts written in certain parts of the song, so the piece can be done as many as three vocalists. I chose this song because I love the lyrical content so much. To me this beautiful song is about how love can bring people back together even from the most painful of circumstances. I hope you enjoy this arrangement as much as I loved creating it.

This passage from Psalm 42 has been a comfort to me in trying times. I set out to compose a musical setting of the text in hopes that the words and music may be of comfort to others too in seasons of grief, adversity, or doubt. “My tears have been my food both day and night, and all the time, people ask, ‘Where is your God?’ But each day, the Lord pours His unfailing love upon me, and through the night, I sing His songs, praying to God who gives me life.� (Psalm 42:3, 8) I composed the piece originally for a cappella choir, but after finishing, I was inspired to create a transcription for Concert Band as well. This transcription may be performed separately, or combined with choir for more impact if desired.

Illusion, is a general commentary to the fact that life is mysterious and generally, uncertain, constantly shifting. We try to influence what happens but usually, outside forces determine the direction of our lives. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between illusion and reality, and, in fact, often people much prefer illusion to reality. 

Mv. 1 - Illusion starts out with an obscure time signature and is constantly shifting tonalities so for a while, you aren’t quite sure where you are. Life is full of such deceptions.

Mv. 2 - Fill the Wine Cup is a series of drinking songs with a lot of gayety and rollocking humour as the party gets more raucous, but eventually things get a little blurry and bombastic and the party winds down. The trombone, due to its ability to imitate drunken reeling with glissandos, is often cast in this role. 

M. 3 - Destiny seems to march on and on, with mankind hoping to control their future, but the implication is that fate is more powerful than one can control.

M. 4 - The ultimate illusion: a Political Debate. The trombone starts out as the first candidate, and the saxophone is the other. The music is circus-like as befits many heated debates.

Illusion was commissioned by Lucas Kaspar and JD Little. The original version was written for Alto Sax and Bass Trombone

The work of about 10 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers and may also be performed on a Trombone with an f-attachment.

Written April 3, 2020, this is an original piano composition in a lyrical, calm, and almost bitter sweet style. Today I heard a newscaster in New York City talking about how he had lived in New York 19 years and as everything is so quiet with people being off the streets because of the virus, for the first time he actually heard the beautiful sound of birds singing… but it feels sad that it took such tragedy to hear the beautiful music that is always there. James Michael Stevens is a prolific composer residing in Nashville, TN and serves as the Music Department Chairman of Welch College.

Disney's movie, Frozen is so popular, and the songs are, as usual, very popular too. This song is my favorite, even it's the most heart-breaking. It shows the lives of Elsa and Anna beginning as happy children, who enjoy each other's company. Elsa finds out that her ice powers are potentially harmful to her younger sister and is forced to isolate herself in her bedroom. Anna tries, unsuccessfully, to coax her sister out to play for many years. Then, they receive news that their parents have died at sea in a storm. Lonely and desperately unhappy, Anna knocks on her sister's bedroom door...

Scored for low flute choir - 4 altos, 2 basses and contrabass. There is an optional double bass part that doubles contrabass to help fortify it if needed. 

This arrangement is simple enough for musicians with intermediate playing skills, but it does require good breath support for the many long tones, and it also has a bit of syncopated rhythms.

Randy Brooks says he was inspired to write this song by a tipsy relative. Important useless but interesting related fact: Brooks is the nephew of Foster Brooks, who made the rounds of '60s TV sitcoms, talkies and variety shows playing a stumbling drunk. Brooks' band talked him out of recording it himself, so he turned it over to Elmo Shropshire (I'm not making this up), who recorded it in 1979. (This is what most people would refer to as a very bad career move on Brooks' part, since he has not otherwise been heard of since.)
This version, instrumental only, spares you the silly story ... but everybody reconizes the tune.

He has partnered with Rebecca Fair for this flowing anthem that celebrates the life and name of Jesus. Including the hymn O HOW I LOVE JESUS with new words was a brilliant idea. Imagine Joseph's amazement when an angel of the Lord appeared in his dream, telling him to take Mary as his wife...that she would have a son who was to be named Jesus “for he will save his people from their sins.” Today we are still amazed at the power of this name, and grateful that we, too, can Call Him Jesus.

Written June 16, 2024, this is an original piano arrangement of the song by Billy Dean, “Somewhere in My Broken Heart” (originally released by Randy Travis and later as a single by Dean). Interestingly, the year before this song was released in 1990, Billy Dean called me and ask about my considering playing piano for him on tour in his band. He was one of the most kind and gracious people I have ever spoken to. At the time I wasn’t as familiar with his music, but after speaking with him I found out he had the number one country video in the country and the next year he released this song which was the CMA Song of the Year. It is a great song I’ve always loved and always wanted to play, so this week I did. BTW, the reason I didn’t was because I was working in a church and wouldn’t be free to travel. Looking back I wish I had. Hope you enjoy it.
