The third part is much spikier and altogether more chaotic within a staccato, canon figure being conspicuous before calming down into a lyrical, descending passage exploring some harmonic modulations. It ends with a reprise of the third theme before coming to a loud climax. The piece lasts for about three and a half minutes.

The opening passages have the chorale melody c. f. in the tenor and slowly build up an agitated mood. In a calm middle section in a Siciliano metre the chorale occurs in the major variant. The corresponding chorale text passage of the 3rd verse is Ich steh hier und singe in gar sichrer Ruh (I stand here and sing in secure peace). After the dramatic climax a calm variation closes the tableau.

The chorale tune is presented twice in the right hand part and it alternates with the phrases of the refrain. In the first verse the melody is played by a solo voice but the second time the texture thickens into three-note chords. It also reaches climax because the range and dynamic level increases but the piece ends quietly as in the beginning. This composition will be very effective in liturgical organ playing and recital programs.
