Hall of the Mountain King starts very softly with the lower string pizzicato and ends with a crashing climax. For a moment the initial passage returns before a climax in A major. The finale concludes as the day ends with the original passage returning in 7/4 time as the business closes for the day. The title is derived from the way the organic material of the first movement is altered during the ensuing movements. Movement two mainly explores the sixteenth note material that is presented during the first movement and is at a faster tempo. The slow third movement is at a slow tempo and is very coloristic. The muted trumpet presents material reminiscent of the opening motivic cell, but it is highly decorated through the use of half-step trills. A sextuplet section has a similar contour to the second germ cell used in the first movement. The lyrical ending to this movement also has its roots in the first movement. The fourth movement is very fast with shifting odd meters and represents the climax of the composition. Hints of motivic cells from the first movement can be heard throughout. The last movement serves as an epilogue by being more closely related to the material of the first movement but it has a characteristic of reflection rather than an exposition. The percussion part serves many roles by imitating the trumpet, adding color and punctuation, and serving as an equal voice in the presentation and development of material. Both musicians perform from the score.

Gaudete! is Christmas carol, believed to originate from the 16th Century. It was published widely in 1582 in the collection of sacred songs known as Piae Cantiones. Whilst the plainchant for the refrain (Gaudete) is clearly published, there is much debate as to where the melody for the verses came from. To preserve the plainchant style of the verses, each member of the quartet has a solo verse – with a few alterations made to preserve each instrument’s unique voice. An additional refrain is included to create a suitable crescendo towards the climax of the piece – highlighting the meaning of Gaudete! (Rejoice!) This version is suitable for quartets of any level, especially those who desire an easily legible and flexible arrangement, ready for a Christmas concert, carol service, or other event. This intermediate/ advanced arrangement of Joy to the World intersperses original melody with the classic Christmas hymn.  It is meant to set the scene of a dark, anxious, and weary world desperate for the arrival of a Savior.  The original melody builds from sadness to hope, and at that moment the beautiful chords of Joy to the World begin, like the light of Christ's arrival breaking onto a dreary world.To me, Joy to the World perfectly reflects both the sentiments of Christ's birth AND His second coming - I wanted this arrangement to be relevant to people now.  So many of us are desperate for the saving, the peace, and the healing that only He can give.  The world feels dark and scary, represented by music mixed throughout the piece, but Christ's coming truly brings joy to the world - magnificent, majestic, and genuine joy.  It did then, it does now, and it will in the future.  This arrangement combines a sense of the world's darkness with the sense of Christ's triumph.  It is complex and majestic in parts, but sweet and simple in others.  And after a grandiose climax, the simple ending is meant to bring us back to where it all began - in the humble setting of a stable in Bethlehem.
