After the second chorus, an enormous breakdown takes place, to end the piece!

The chiaroscuro-technique developed by painters of the Italian renaissance served to intensify contrasts and effects of optical depth. In Klar/Obskur, I tried to transfer the general idea of this technique on the rather unusual instrumentation of two double-reed woodwinds and piano. On the one hand, a clear, well articulated playing is characteristic for these instruments, on the other hand, they have an often underestimated potential of „twilight: air-sounds and fragile, shady colours have a especially attractive when being produced by double-reed instruments (which are often, and superficially regarded as being less capable of differentiated sounds than flute or clarinet). The piano, too, has a broad bandwidth of possibilities between percussive and delicate playing to complement the woodwinds which, in return, can absorb and continue the fading piano sounds. The beginning introduces the two contrasting elements that form the basic material for the piece: a clear, sharp chord, followed by fragile, dim sounds. The changes between these elements as well as their combination and amalgamation produce an enormous spectrum of colours and gesture. After this „motto-like opening follow four quite clearly separated short sections, each of them being characterised by a well-defined texture: a partly almost imperceptible air-sound passage, a short sequence of microintervallic notes, a burst of virtuosity and a recourse to the fragile sounds of the beginning. The second, longer main part consists of three sections merging subtly into each other: a short unisono-passage, marked elastic [federnd], is being dissolved into its basic elements; from these remainders, a confrontation of low, ‚arcane‘ bassoon and piano sounds and a strongly ornamented melodic line of the oboe emerges, leading to a short but powerful climax. The piece is concluded by an extended, relaxed epilogue, containing a short piano solo and a duet of oboe and bassoon and, finally, a quotation of the „elastic character of the middle section. Walking In Her Garden is an arrangement of the 1904 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond.  The text compares his lover to the beautiful flowers.  Then she starts talking to the flowers, asking them about her lover.  It concludes with the famous he loves me...he loves me not.... as she plucks the petals from the daisy.  My arrangement adds quite a bit of drama to the piece.  I have converted the main theme into an oom-pah-pah waltz and greatly increased the tempo to a brisk concert waltz for the first two verses.  The B theme, where she talks to the flowers, resorts to a slower waltz ballad similar to the original.  There is then a brief recapitulation of the oom-pah-pah theme building up to the suspenseful climax.   I created a lento ending as the answers to her questions slowly unfold.   This is a great concert piece full of passion and energy that can be dramatized.  It is also perfect for any wedding today, whether vintage or modern.6 page score;  2:30 minutesI have published it in 3 different vocal ranges on this site:  High - low D to high F#; Medium - low Bb to high D; Low - low G to high B.   The MP3 recording is of the Medium Voice version.  Vocal part is Intermediate level, while Piano part is Advanced Intermediate level.  This piece is also found in my book, Vintage Wedding Songs, a collection of 5 songs which is also available on this site.

The solo bass trombone is thefocal point of the musical discourse, acting throughout largely as a protagonist – with muchmaterial best described as bitterly lyrical. The work maintains a generally dark, obsessive,and bitter tone throughout.Unlike some concerti, however, the work is not about an aggression between soloist and therest of the ensemble. Rather the bass trombone is “firstâ€� among a collection of like mindedindividuals – all expressing the same sentiments and aggressions.The opening section is marked “spasmodic.â€� Quiet nervous twitches serve as a backdrop to amelodic unfolding of the basic material and interval content. My first acquaintance with Lars Ek Hot Trio refers to the autumn of 1982. It took place in Bergen during the annual enrollment of accordionist by the name TREKKSPILLGALLA In Grieghallen where Lars Ek until now been unknown. It has become a tradition with a Swedish touch during these autumn hits. Strong names Ebbe Jularbo, Roland Cedermark, Norwegian-Swede Olaf Wernersen to name a few. But no one has so far been stormed the audience as Lars Ek Hot Trio did. To experience the original Frosini, Nisse Lind, Ragnar Sundquist represents something new and good in the Accordion music. Genuine original accordion music that we remember so dearly good from the 1930-40's and which had been lying idle since then. The above-mentioned debut has caused several national border crossings for the trio. The last is the spring tour in western Norway this year (1985), where I had the honor to accompany the ensemble from Nor fjord Bergen. An experience for both the audience and the musicians. Yet we feel the turbulence after Lasses bellows murmur down the valley-society’s country. At Voss reached climax when history's first Trekkspill-fan-club became a fact of Lars Ek Fan Club. In alternating western country natural emanation from our flower at the fjord to the mountain huge snowstorm where we stood firm on the Vika Mountain on our way to Voss. After waiting up to a snow plow and colon driving, Lars Ek experience a new Norway. These strong impression of the natural contrasts mixed with the local population intimacy and spontaneity and contact Lasse put on the idea of a Norway-LP, which therefore now been completed in record time. Finally, I would quote one of Norway's largest newspapers to: Lars Ek is the best we have heard - and seen - on the accordion. Do not let it go three more years before he is in Bergen again. Each of the four movements, while utilizing the same quartal- and quintal-based harmonic language, has a unique feel. The movements are as follows:I. SKAThis movement draws its rhythm and form from Jamaican ska music of the 1960s, but it is also imbued with a sense of chaos and panic contrary to the relaxed feel of its namesake. It demands rhythmic fluidity and precise hand placement, but rhythmically, it is the simplest of the four movements.II. BERCEUSEThis movement draws its inspiration from the lullabies of Chopin and Liszt, yet subverts the expectations given by its name considerably. Dark, mysterious, and suspenseful harmonies contrast over the sweet rocking motions of the rhythm before giving way to a stormy climax before the piece fades back to its original theme. In contrast to the almost mechanical nature of the first movement, this movement is overly expressive and lyrical, even during its most turbulent sections.III. MARCHA playful reference to the marches of John Philip Sousa, this movement makes rhythmic references to a few different pieces, including Fairest of the Fair. It is a return of sorts to the chaotic atmosphere of the first movement, and it ends rather abruptly, providing a sense of suspense before the final movement.IV. TOCCATAThe longest and most complex of the movements, Toccata combines the tonal and harmonic structures of the first three movements with complicated, syncopated rhythms and unusual time signatures. A number of themes are manipulated via augmentation, inversion, retrograde, and diminution, and abrupt changes in texture and tempo grab the listener's attention.

Throughout, the rhythm maintains a consistent patter, reminiscent of raindrops, interspersed with sporadic bass notes that mimic distant thunder. Short, arpeggiated figures add texture, evoking the rumbling of an approaching storm.Structurally, I employ a through-composed format, crafting a narrative arc that follows the ebb and flow of the storm's intensity. Central to this structure is a broken chord motif, initially presented as quavers and later evolving into semiquavers. As this motif transfers between hands, it symbolises the shifting dynamics of the storm, heightening the piece's dramatic tension and adding depth to its narrative.
