Following the instrumental structure of Bolero, the piece begins with softer timbres of the woodwinds in the same manner Ravel uses the orchestra, gradually becoming much more raucous. This is a loop station composition for electric violin that I composed for my live-looping duo, The Khromatiks, in 2014. Doing my part to increase the available repertoire for extended range violins out here on the internet!I originally recorded this tune on a 7-string electric violin with a Boomerang III loop station. That being said, there are plenty of other gear configurations that will work. Any phrase looper/sampler that is capable of playing 2 separate tracks or sections with overdubs will be able to handle this structure, such as the Singular Sound Aeros, Boss RC-30, Ableton Live with a MIDI controller, etc. If you don't play 7-string, a 5-string can also play this chart as written if you transpose the bass stave up one octave and use an octave pedal for the pizzicato bass lines. A standard 4-string can also work, although most phrases will have to be transposed 8va.A little about this tune: there are 2 distinct sections. The first is a latin groove with a a highly syncopated chopping groove and a simple, soaring melodic head. This section can be opened up for a variety of solo ideas from jazz to Latin to funk, before it transitions using a common tone into the bridge, which is more of an epilogue. This section has much more of a heavy rock bent, with a thick stack of string overdubs that mimic an orchestra sitting over an overdriven rhythm groove, and a breakdown where aggressive drum fills are accompanied by rhythmic chugging in the violin. Finally, all of these ideas culminate as the A section melody is re-introduced over the rock groove, building to an ultimate climax.With The Khromatiks this piece was performed as a duo with violin & drums/percussion, but also works as a violin solo. I usually add additional percussive loops when I perform this solo.I have also included three auxiliary string parts, which can be used to perform this piece with a string section or an orchestra. The parts line up with the second section of the tune and replace some of the loops with live parts. Originally sung by Russian pop star Polina Gagarina, it would suit a large group or even a massed chorus, and involves a 'stomp stomp clap' moment similar to that in Queen's 'We Will Rock You'. This arrangement could come at a dramatic moment in a show, or close a high school concert. It starts with an alto solo, which could be sung by a whole section, and builds to a vocally intense climax.

The work received its premiere performance at l’Église de la Sainte-Trinité, Paris, on October 24, 2013 by Alexis Galpérine, violin, Magali Léger, soprano, Saori Kikuchi, harp, and Carolyn Shuster Fournier, organist. The work consists of  three Latin texts from the Requiem Mass. The first, Exaudi, is in “Larghettoâ€� tempo and serves as a prelude. The second, Dies Iræ, marked “Allegro agitato,â€� is an intense and dark scherzo in D minor with chromatic runs in the organ and violin which accompany the soprano. A central, more lyrical section follows based on the “Lacrymosaâ€� text in a slower tempo, leading to the song’s only serene moment: “Pie Jesu Domine.â€� The “Dies Iraeâ€� music returns, and the song ends violently and decisively. The third song, In Paradisum, introduces the harp. The soprano melody is modeled very closely on the Gregorian chant based on this text. A gentle climax occurs on the text “habeas eternam,â€� and the song slowly winds down to its end, having laid to rest life’s struggles in the eternity of heaven. Duration: 12:30.

Tis Summer In Thine Eyes is a piano solo arrangement of the 1901 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano.  I have slowed the piece down for a more romantic pop and reharmonized the original melody.  I then created contrasting sections for more emotional drama.  All sections are in 4 instrumental voices; so a rich, busy texture.  The opening section is gently flowing, with the 4 voices interweaving.  The second section is bolder and rhythmic, with the inner voicing as off beat chords in both hands.  It builds in intensity to the climax then winds back out.  The coda returns with the flowing parts which further wind out and fade away.   This is a dramatic solo composition of 20th century romantic pop with a few other flavors mixed in.  2 page score; 2:30 minutesThis piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

The piece picks up tempo with a rhythmic drive and a TB feature that expands into full choir befor going into a developing section that introduces the Latin phrase Stellae in Aeternum meaning Forever with the stars. A broad musical climax features numerous overlapping independent melodies previously featured before a dramtic final keychange and a slow, soft ending.

Notice the sounds of the day including bird calls (bar 35), the sun rising (bar 45), and church bells pealing in the distance (bar 58). As the texture in the music intensifies, it symbolises all forms of life engaging in their daily activities (bar 63). As the climax unfurls (bar 73), the focus returns to the majestic sun, as it continues its journey into the sky.This piece is to be played with the sustain pedal throughout. Specific pedal suggestions have been marked in various bars. Touches of rubato are required at times to allow the piece space. The melodic line must always be emphasized over the accompaniment, regardless of the clef.

In the trio, the march theme is turned first into a tonal ballad beforegradually transforming back into the language of the march. A faster reprise of the opening music follows.The ninth prelude (Envoi: Very slow, from afar) is an elegaic “farewell.â€� Romantic gestures and harmonies try to assertthemselves before the music dies away.Performance Note: Although it is preferred that the entire set of nine preludes be played in concert, individual preludes (or smallerassembled groupings) may be performed when necessary for programming needs.
