Louise Farrenc was a profoundly influential French composer, performer, professor, and author. Though she would ultimately become quite a sought-after performer, her potential as a composer was recognized quite early on. Women were not permitted to enroll in conventional composition classes at the Conservatoire de Paris at the time, but, she did receive private lessons from Anton Reicha, the professor of composition there. Years later she would receive a permanent appointment as Professor of Piano at the same institution, a position she held for thirty years. She was the only woman during the 19th century to bear that title. Her piano etudes possess pedagogical value as well as great beauty and character. These works lend themselves quite well to the guitar duo setting. While I have rendered all of Farrenc’s melodies quite faithfully, I have taken liberties with the accompaniments in order to make them more idiomatic to the guitar. Likewise, many of the effects of which the guitar is capable have been brought to bear in ways that deviate from the original intent of the etude. Alternatively, the challenges that some of these etudes were meant to address for the piano student are amplified by this adaptation. For example, etude 5 is intended to enable the piano student to improve the coordination between their left and right hands. It certainly presents a challenge in that regard to the guitar duo!These selections are entirely suitable for guitarists with limited experience, though they could, of course, be beautifully realized by players with a great deal more experience as well.Louise Farrenc était une compositrice, interprète, professeur et auteure française profondément influente. Howard (A0.998867). Monody is a fast tempo study for solo cello which explores the development of a single line (there is no double stopping). The work centres around E minor, and states the main motif at the outset (E, G, F#). This is then extended and transformed throughout the course of the piece. An initial introductory motivic passage is followed by a scalic section that features another core concept of the work; that of the octatonic scale (alternating semitones and tones, or vice versa). Then comes the main extended scherzo-like section, itself in a ternary structure, that exploits permutations of the opening motif and the octatonic scale, across the entire range of the cello. The work builds towards a climax, including in extreme high pitch and loud dynamics. After a silence, there follows a very quiet and mysterious muted coda, which briefly recounts the main motivic ideas of the piece, before ending on the only pizzicato note of the work. It is written in A minor (aka no sharps or flats) and includes no accidentals. As such, it should fit pretty much any standard model of small harp with zero modifications, including any model of Harpsicle Harp (even the ones without levers), Roosebeck Pakistani harps, Harp-E, Musicmakers Sonnet 29, or Dusty Strings Ravenna 26.Because you will need to silence each chord immediately after playing to get that sharp, abbrasive, almost staccato sound from my video (something I didn't have the tools to notate fully in the score), this song is trickier than it looks and is not really a new beginner piece, despite the simple notation. Beginners are, of course, welcome to try playing it exactly as written. In it, one Abraham of Wurzburg, an aspiring medieval mage and devout Jew, describes a tour that he made of points in Europe and the Middle East, searching for a mentor who would not turn out to be a charlatan (or worse). Abraham eventually finds such a figure in a small town on the banks of the Nile. Here he meets the great magician Abramelin, whose system of magic Abraham sets out in detail. What results is the present volume, which puts forth a complete course in ceremonial magic (both white and black). In Abramelin’s system, after a lengthy period of self-purification and prayer, one may call upon one’s Holy Guardian Angel, who will then instruct one further on how to conjure up the princes and demons of Hell to do your bidding. The crux of this involves using certain special squares of anagrammatic words that would compel the conjured demon to perform specified tasks. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808676).     Marvin Hamlisch’s score for the 1973 movie The Sting revived interest in ragtime music. Ragtime, of course, is music, often in march-time, that features syncopation, a ragged beat. It originated in African-American districts of large cities and first flourished during the period, 1895-1918. One of the most successful ragtime composers was Scott Joplin, known as the King of Ragtime. Hamlisch used several Joplin compositions as background music for the George Roy Hill-directed film, and one of those was this beautiful and contemplative 1909 composition, Solace: A Mexican Serenade.     In All Music Guide to Classical Music: The Definitive Guide to Classical Music (Woodstra et al., ed., CMP Books: 2005), Blair Johnston called Solace a musical hybrid neither authentically Mexican nor authentic ragtime. It is, instead, a habanera, but also a very lovely piece of Americana.    This brass quintet arrangement of Solace was adapted from the Joplin piano score. Like the score, this arrangement is in 2/4 time and contains a lot of 16th notes. Joplin’s tempo instruction, however, is Very slow march time, and the metronome marking suggests 96 eighth notes a minute, so in reality the actual tempo is an andante 4/8. Trumpet 1 has some B-above-the-staff notes in the last section, Trumpet 2 has a few interesting rhythmic figures in section B; Trombone has 3 or 4 F-above-the-staff notes, and Tuba plays a couple of top-of-the-staff A’s in section D and at the very end. Plus, of course, the piece is syncopated.    Completed in 2017, this arrangement runs about 6 minutes, 10 seconds.
