The Intermezzo was a character piece from the Romantic Period which often took a specific musical idea, and created a bittersweet, elegiac mood, similar to the feeling evoked by a Nocturne. This piece takes the interval of a 6th and weaves it through several configurations to create this same feeling in the first offering from the GateWay Editions First Position String Orchestra Series. A Brahmsian feeling predominates throughout. At 5 mins 30 secs duration, this all-first-position piece makes an excellent concert feature for the ensemble that is finding its voice, but may not yet be up to the level of multi-position full-fledged classical string music. The tempo is stately without being draggy, the mood is somber but not dark, and tuneful without being busy or meandering. The key signature of one sharp makes this nicely adapted to teaching and performance by students, while the rich writing makes it quite presentable to an adult concert audience.The bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. The PDF provided here is a score, and a single part for each section. Multiple printings of each part, as needed for your ensemble, are permissible, of course. There are NO notes out of first position, or outside the range of the second year of string pedagogy, the basses having a bit more need to move up 1/2 position for each string. n There are no trills or fast passages across strings. Road Movie was commissioned by Professor Niels-Ole Bo Johansen of the Royal Academy of Music, Arhus Denmark and premiered in Salt Lake City Utah for the International Trombone Festival 2008. Wayne Siegel has written a compelling and dramatic musical canvas using a large, 16-part Trombone Ensemble.  He uses many special effects on the Trombone to give his score a vivid sound imagery. Road Movie consists of three movements, each depicting a scene in an imaginary road movie. The first movement, AM, is set on an early morning on a country highway. The abbreviation AM is, of course, ambiguous, implying both the early hours of the day as well as the type of radio that was most common in cars in my youth. The second movement, Canyon Canon depicts a landscape inspired by the Grand Canyon. The third movement, Highway, the road movie comes to a most tragic end. This work of about 23 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

This is an arrangement with a tale to tell... A few years ago my wife and I were invited to attend a surprise 90th birthday party for the legendary brass band conductor James Scott. The party was held at Uppermill golf course in the heart of Saddleworth. Anyone familiar with the annual brass band festival that is the Whit Friday March contests will be familiar with the area and perhaps also with its somewhat damp climate. My wife and I decided that we would make a mini-break out of it and took our touring caravan to stay on a small farm site near Freisland (another Whit Friday venue). the weather was as predicted and it rained... and it rained... and then it rained some more to the extent that we had a family of ducks swimming around outside our caravan door. TV, and Internet connection in Saddleworth, in a caravan in the rain is virtually non-existent so we were well and truly stuck. We ventured out into nearby town of Oldham and eventually found a bookshop. Browsing through the music section I stumbled across a piano reduction of the show score to Mary Poppins. Contained in the score was a 32 bar, simple piano reduction of Step in Time... The rest, as they say, is history... This arrangement is not such a simple reduction. There are frequent changes of key, and time signatures throughout, but it has proven to be great fun to play and rehearse. Particularly with bands that are not the best 'sight readers'...

The composition encodes the donor’s first name (praenomen) as a musical motif, which is stated before the start of each piece. I also enjoyed imagining ways that each piece could reflect an aspect of each subject: 1. Barbara is a classy woman who I imagine has quite a social calendar; 2. Rachel manages three energetic children (two are my students) yet remains cool-headed; 3. John is a former adult student with an interest in new age piano music; 4. Marjorie is an effervescent personality and a logical thinker; 5. Angela is a thoughtful friend and is full of pep; and 6. Jean is a fellow church pianist who enjoys that genre’s sentimental style. These compositions can, of course, be enjoyed for their own merits.

Through its many, abrupt and questioning diversions it portrays a process of self-interrogation which can become quite confrontational at times. Despite this the music always returns to the simple diatonic melody that forms the principle character of this work, regardless of the metamorphoses of its harmonization. This is of course with the exception of the closing passages, in which the work retains a melodic construction of limited intervallic usage taken from the previous diversion. Though, whether this retention represents an answer or a lingering question is not made clear.

Priestley. In this morale-boosting depression movie, set in the industrial north of England, Fields stars as a resourceful, determined working class heroine, laid off from her job in a clothing mill, who has to seek work in the seaside resort of Blackpool. This gives her the opportunity both to fall into many misadventures and, of course, to sing.The decision to film on location brings the film a life and immediacy all too absent from most films of the period. The film provides us with a snapshot of life in a seaside resort in the 1930s. The final scene of the millworkers returning to the re-opened mill while Fields leads them in the rousing title song has become an almost iconic film cliché.This is a simple arrangement of the title song with the lead line on solo Cornet. There is a vocal part included if required.
