This is the first of a set of ‘ SIX GENTILLESSES EN TROIS PARTIES’ for musette (a type of bagpipe), viele (an early violin) and a bass instrument (probably a cello) published by Boivin in Paris in 1731 and described as also playable on recorder, transverse flute, oboe or violin. Of course all the parts could be doubled (good for sales) and the instructions ‘tous’ for all players and ‘seul’ when only one should play would come in useful. Boismortier became very wealthy from sales of his music. The three movements, Gayment, Gracieusement & Gayment are for three independent players of intermediate standard and above. This arrangement for flute, oboe and bassoon or cello has been lightly edited. All edits are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The original two top parts have been set in the modern treble clef. The Boivin edition used the old violin clef. The edition also had no dynamic markings as the musette was not capable of dynamic variation. Generally the sections marked ‘tous’ should be louder than those marked ‘seul’ but, since dynamics are so much a matter of personal taste, I have left these to the performers’ discretion.

In 1990, while chairman of the music department of Paine College, I spent a week doing research on a project in the Philadelphia Free Library.   In the course of that project, I stumbled upon an unpublished major chamber piece by one of America’s first homegrown Romantic composers, William Wallace Gilchrist (1846-1916).  The find was a vellum (ink on onion skin) working score and parts - working score in that there were changes made on the pages (assumed to be in the composer’s own handwriting) of Gilchrist’s first piano trio. I had other projects at hand, so it was 2005 before I finished editing and annotating the score and parts, presented here.  I encourage the reader to refer to the editorial notes in preparing this piece for performance.

The opposite of firm footing, stability, taking a stand is vacillating between ideas or chasing numerous ideas. ♫ I pictured the wind scattering leaves and debris, but failing to budge heavy objects, anchored to the ground. ♫ Our culture bids us chase after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills … The problem, of course is that the shelf life of the satisfaction that these things brings is very short. Chasing after status, power, money, pleasure, thrills, etc. is like is like chasing the wind. ♫ Portraying chasing the wind allowed me to use some contemporary classical composition techniques such as polymeter, polytonality, and deliberate dissonance. The first theme suggests the futility and inevitable frustration of chasing the wind.
