Known mainly these day for the wonderful 'Scherzo' from his Symphony No.4 in D Minor, during a colourful lifetime, Henry Litolff wrote many virtuosic compositions, indeed he was feted by many of his contemporary peers. Liszt himself in fact dedicated his first piano concerto to Litolff. Les Octaves is a bravura work typical of Litolff's style, this arrangement brings many technical challenges for the five players to 'get their teeth into', not least of course that it is scored for Eb, Bb, A, Basset Horn and Bass Clarinet! Uncomprimising from the start, well actually when I come to think about it, it does not let up until the final pause! In this piece (the first of an open-ended series of pieces), I explore four pharmaceutical agents, imagining how their effects on one’s body might be translated into sounds.The work opens with a prelude, which exhibits the primary melodic materials the rest of the piece is built upon.Ciprofloxacin is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics. I envision a “battle� between the drug and the offending bacterium, much as it occurs in the course of treating respiratory tract infections and urinary infections.In Albuterol, I begin the movement with rather “breathless� figures that gradually calm and end in wide open respite. Albuterol is best known for treating exacerbations of asthma, which relaxes bronchi that have become inflamed.When blood pressure becomes too high, this can cause a number of life-threatening conditions. One drug commonly used to bring blood pressure under control is Metoprolol, which acts on a number of bodily systems to “slow things down.� In this movement, I depict this gradual releasing of tension both in rhythmic figuration and in tempo.The final movement presents Modafinil, part of a relatively new class of drugs known as eugeroics. Essentially a stimulant, modafinil promotes wakefulness and is claimed by some to increase energy level and mental clarity. In this closing movement, I depict one of the less pleasant side effects of this stimulation: the jitters.

As Whiskers explores the outside of the house, he finds smashed windows, broken doors, rotting wood, and a once loved and alive home, abandoned and forgotten, left to rot and fall apart.He comes back around to the front of the house now that he has had a good look around it and has a decision to make. Does his curious nature take him inside to explore the unknown, with a possibility of finding food or a safe place to live or does he go back and find his way back home? Of course, Whiskers can’t help himself and he decides to venture into the house to find out what lies inside.

Struggling to find a jumping off point, I turned to the internet in hopes for a spark, and instead ended up on Reddit looking at the daily viral internet. For unknown reasons, this was the inspiration I needed, and I turned to old school memes, and decided to write a collection of short character pieces based on the origin of some of my favorites. Success Kid is based upon the internet’s favorite fist-pumping toddler. I imagined my nephew, Georgie when he was three, and once stayed in continuous movement for nearly ten hours. I was exhausted watching him, and his frenetic energy is the driving inspiration. The performer is instructed to play this just “within control,� meaning that one click faster on the metronome could bring it to a crashing halt. Annoyed Picard is based upon a single screenshot of the syndicated classic Star Trek: The Next Generation. Although this meme is shows frustration, the shot in questions is actually famed Shakespearean actor, Patrick Stewart, quoting Shakespeare in a vain attempt to woo one of his crewmates away from an evil alien species. I thought it only fitting to write a simple melodic melody, fitting for the words of Shakespeare, that slowly morphs into an exciting sci-fi riff. This is fine is based on the single panel that is synonymous with the worst possible situations. A dog drinks tea in a room slowly filling with flames. The truth is that all isn’t well, and in the final three panels of the comic strip, the room slowly is engulfed in flames and the dog melts. I wanted to show the chaos and destruction of this comic strip by taking the same melody and distorting it past the point of comfort. Of course, the movement has to end with the joke of the meme.
