Skye Boat Song (Over the Sea to Skye) An intermediate-level woodwind arrangement of this favourite Scottish melody, featuring Horn in E-flat or F.  The tune may be familiar to some as the theme from Outlander. The piece is scored for the following: ·        Part 1: Flute ·        Part 2: Oboe ·        Part 3: Clarinet in B-flat ·        Part 4: Clarinet in B-flat ·        Part 5: Clarinet in B-flat ·        Part 6: Bassoon OR Part 6: Bass Clarinet in B-flat ·        Part 7: Tenor Horn in E-flat (Alto Sax) OR Part 7: Horn in F (Cor Anglais) This arrangement was originally created for a small wind course at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on the Isle of Skye, with 1 – 2 players per part and featuring E-flat horn. There are some alternative options for the feature part – the version in E-flat could instead by played by Alto Saxophone, while there is also a version in F which could be played by French Horn or Cor Anglais. Also included are optional easier ‘add-on’ parts for Flute/Oboe, Clarinet in B-flat/Soprano Saxophone, Low Clarinet in B-flat, Tenor Saxophone, Mini-bassoon (in F or G) and Bassoon – ideal if your group contains a few less-adept players.  These should be used sparingly, however! The cover photo shows the ferry from Mallaig to Armadale, which brought some of the students ‘Over the Sea to Skye’ for the first performance of this particular arrangement of the Skye Boat Song.

Evocative piano solo for Early Intermediate (2nd, 3rd year piano).One of my favorite moments as a piano teacher was discovering Night Train by Chris Goldston in that great collection of Alfred's called Contest Winners, in this case Vol. 2. I'll never forget turning to the second page of this moody A minor piece and finding the Bb Lydian, D minor, and E Phrygian passages. That piece is magic, and most of my students would confirm that. The A minor return has a sublime little twist, which was one of the inspirations for indicating hand positions larger than just 5 steps by means of a V. And, of course the final chord is probably the first time the student has ever heard, much less played, the sound of stacked 4ths (because they're probably not yet listening to Coltrane and McCoy Tyner). This edition of the solo clarinet part of the Artie Shaw Concerto for Clarinet is a note for note transcription of what Shaw recorded on the record version and in the motion picture.Shaw’s solos as played in both the motion picture and record version are represented in great detail with the film solo shown as ossia so the player can view and choose which they might prefer to play. As many techniques as possible are carefully detailed to show ornaments, slurs, accents etc.The companion parts available here for big band and strings restores many elements missing in other versions available.  The strings here are restored to the original voicings so  important to the style of the classic sound of the period. The solos are transcribed note for note as played by greats such as Billy Butterfield on Trumpet, Johnny Guarnieri on Piano, Les Robinson on Alto Sax, Jerry Jerome on Tenor Sax, Vernon “Brownie� Brown on Trombone. There is an entire sax riff that was extemporaneously improvised during the session that is missing entirely in other published versions. The instrumentation is also restored to only the instruments that were used in Shaw’s recordings. There are many details that help the ease of performability of the genre and gesture of jazz idiom. Lastly, the intention is that this should be performed with saxophones. However, there are optional parts for clarinets and bassoons that can be used only if saxes are not available. I have performed from this solo part many times and I hope others will do so as well. I give great thanks to several people, who over the course of my career, taught me many skills that resulted in this. Duration 3:30 A Child Is Born is a truly beautiful picture—sacred or secular—of the Advent story painted from the enduring viewpoint of his mother, Mary. Written in 1969 by jazz trumpeter Thad Jones. The lyrics were added independently by Alec Wilder after he heard the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra perform it. The song has been described by Bob Yurochko (with contributor Wynton Marsalis) in A Short History of Jazz as a “beautiful ballad of mainstream jazz. This arrangement begins with a quiet intro in which both the piano and the Bb Instrument touch very lightly on Silent Night. The easily memorized single stanza is sung first by the altos, who are then joined by and succeeded by the sopranos and then deftly handed off to altos, tenors and basses who are subsequently involved in each four-part cadence point well as other unison and two-part sections. The halved repeat of the stanza can be a very nice piano feature or, optionally a Bb instrument—Flugelhorn (even a muted Trumpet) a Bb Clarinet or a Bb tenor saxophone can supply the solo with the voices singing the very light background. The key change is kept simple, with a descending scale into the new key. The final section makes additional mention of STILLE NACHT as well as echoing the intro at the jazz ending. Still, the instrumental part remains optional and the chord symbols make it easy to include string bass or even gentle jazz guitar (drums on this should, of course be mainly light brushes). The vocal parts are limited to practical ranges and, while there is divisi in the soprano part, each voice is always easily sung). The accessible accompaniment has comparatively little movement in the left hand beyond the middle of a typical measure, especially when there are technical requirements in the right hand. #choral #jazz choral #church choral #liturgical choral.
