Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1260605 Composed by Martha Hill Duncan. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary. Score. 27 pages. Abundant Silence #853798. Published by Abundant Silence (A0.1260605). SPIRALS IN THE SKY, BY MARTHA HILL DUNCANFOR SOLO PIANO, LATE INTERMEDIATE, 21 PAGES.....................................In this whimsical marriage of astronomy and music, my husband,  astrophysicist, Dr. Martin Duncan and I have combined our talents to celebrate the beauty of the night sky and the magic of music. M.H. DuncanMartha Hill Duncan’s passion for music started early, inspired by her mother, who sang and played the piano by ear. Martha was a member of the first graduating class of the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin. Her piano works have been inspired, at least in part, by her long-time career as a piano teacher and some of these pieces, as well as her art songs, appear in educational publications and syllabi. Piano collection titles include The Sunken Garden, Isla Vista Suite, Precipitations, Angular Measures, Limestone Etchings, Rainy Days and Cottage Days. Since moving from the United States to Canada, many of her compositions have been inspired by Canadian landscapes and texts. In January 2014, her youth opera, Searching the Painted Sky, with poet/librettist Janet Windeler Ryan, was premiered at the National Opera Association Convention in New York City. She was named a finalist for the 2020 Louis Applebaum Award.A former piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is also a founding member of Red Leaf Pianoworks, a self-publishing composers’ collective. Originally from Houston, Texas, Martha and her husband Martin have lived in Kingston, Ontario since 1988. She also conducts the women’s choir She Sings! and has two grown children and two granddaughters. To explore more of her music, please visit www.marthahillduncan.comDr. Martin Duncan was born in London, England and was raised in Montreal, Canada. As a child, his biggest question was, “What would happen if...?” His first experiments involved creating foul-smelling concoctions with his chemistry set in hisparents’ basement. He survived and went on to complete an Honours Physics degree at McGill University, followed by graduate degrees in astronomy at the Universities of Toronto and Texas at Austin. Post-doctoral research was performed at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1988, he became a professor of astronomy and physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. In his academic career he has co-authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited over 8,000 times. He has presented numerous invited talks at international scientific conferences and has been the guest speaker at many public lectures. His research has ranged from the study of black holes to simulations of the formation and orbital evolution of planets and comets. He is best known for the prediction of the existence of a disk of small icy bodies beyond Neptune, which he and his colleagues called the Kuiper Belt. In 1996, the International Astronomical Union named Asteroid 6115 “martinduncan” in honor of his contributions to planetary dynamics.

Violin and orchestra - difficult - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6622 (Memorial for the Columbia Astronauts). Composed by Peter Eotvos. This edition: piano reduction with solo part. Downloadable, Piano reduction with solo part. Duration 21 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6622. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6622). Eötvös wrote this piece in memory of the seven astronauts who lost their lives in the Space Shuttle Columbia tragedy in 2003. The number 7 determines the musical, rhythmic and formal structure of the work: 49 musicians are divided into seven groups, and as well as the solo violin there are six further violins arranged correspondingly around the hall; and the solo violin itself portrays each of the astronauts and their different origin, from America via Israel to India, in folkloristically tinged cadenzas. 'The violin concerto Seven is a very personal monologue and the musical expression of my sympathy towards the seven astronauts who lost their lives while exploring space in fulfilment of a fundamental dream of mankind.' Instrumental Duet Alto Saxophone,Instrumental Duet,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.532826 Composed by Therese Brenet. Contemporary,Sacred,Standards. Score and parts. 11 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #44849. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.532826). The German mystic the Abbess, Saint Hildegarde de Bingen, describes in the Sciula contraction of Cito uias domini (Learn the ways of the Lord), the visions that she had from childhood. This kind of experience is in a certain extent comparable to the beginning of the process of artistic creation. It was the case of Hildegarde herself, who had great expertise in many fields, including medicine, astronomy. and poetry which she often set in musical setting which were often very inspired. According to God’s will, my soul sometimes goes up into the heights of the sky and in the various regions of air, sometimes among the various peoples who live in far-off lands, unknown places because I see these things in my soul and according to this manner I see them also according to the imprecision of clouds and other creatures. I do not hear these things with my ear, I do not perceive them according to the thoughts of my heart, nor any of my five sense. I see them only en my soul, and the eyes of my body are open; And I see them awake both day and night This work also exists in a version for alto saxophone, viola and piano.

Brass Ensemble Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.802574 Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Contemporary. Score and parts. 11 pages. Peet du Toit #5801391. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802574). Samba do AviĂŁo (a.k.a. Song of the Jet, translated literally as Airplane Samba) is a Brazilian song composed in 1962 by AntĂ´nio Carlos Jobim, who also wrote the original Portuguese lyrics. The English-language lyrics are by Gene Lees.In the biography Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Illuminated Man, Helena Jobim describes how her brother came up with the idea for the song: Tom's many walks from Ipanema to Santos Dumont Airport yielded that ode of beauty... He would head towards the airport, following the water's edge around Guanabara's Bay. The pretext to go there was to buy foreign magazines and newspapers. From Santos Dumont Airport he could observe his passion, the airplane. Yet he still kept some distance from those machines. He was afraid of flying, but he loved their power, splendor, and aerodynamics-man's conquest over machine. In the song, Jobim writes about landing at GaleĂŁo in Rio de Janeiro. The airport was renamed in his honor in 1999 and is now called Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport.Jobim wrote Samba do AviĂŁo for an Italian film, Copacabana Palace (1962), where it was performed by Jula De Palma and I 4 + 4 di Nora Orlandi. The movie was filmed in Rio and features cameo appearances by Jobim, JoĂŁo Gilberto and Os Cariocas. The first performance of the song was by Jobim and Os Cariocas in August 1962 at the Au Bon Gourmet restaurant in Copacabana, Rio, at what music historian Ruy Castro calls the bossa nova show to end all bossa nova shows, as it featured Jobim, JoĂŁo Gilberto, VinĂcius de Moraes and Os Cariocas on stage together for the only time. The first recording of the song was released in October 1962 by Elza Laranjeira. Os Cariocas had a hit with their rendition in 1963.The first English-language version was by Tony Bennett for his 1965 album If I Ruled the World: Songs for the Jet Set.Here is my brass quintet version of the song for your enjoyment.

Jazz Combo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.970739 Composed by Eduardo Arolas. Arranged by Mike Strand. Concert,Jazz,Latin,World. Score and parts. 3 pages. Michael M. Strand #4895835. Published by Michael M. Strand (A0.970739). Arranged by Mike Strand, ASCAPâ??This is a lead sheet for a jazz or Latin combo or ensemble.  It may serve as the basis for a variety of arrangements, improvisations, or contrafacts. The audio sample is a jazz bossa nova iReal Pro accompaniment, combined with the lead sheet melody in Finale PrintMusic.  In this arrangement, you will hear acoustic guitar and violin, often heard in tango ensembles in the early 20th century. This bossa nova is inspired by Eduardo Arolasâ??s never-published tango, Volcán (Volcano).  At least itâ??s never been published according to the todotango.com web site.  Eduardo Arolas is a famous tango composer who is well documented on that web site.  Also on that web site, you can listen to Osvaldo Requenaâ??s piano performance of Volcán from Arolasâ??s original piano sheets (written circa 1917).   Years ago, I developed and wrote a tango quintet arrangement of Volcán by listening carefully to Requenaâ??s recorded piano performance on the web site.  My quintet arrangement, in turn, was my source for writing this bossa nova arrangement.   So, now Volcán has finally been published, but as a bossa nova!  Wherever Señor Arolas may be, I hope he understands.  In this bossa nova arrangement, I believe I've preserved the spirit of Arolas's original tango.Without knowing exactly what was in Eduardo Arolas's mind when he wrote the original tango, this is my personal idea of the message behind the music:Introduction:  Let me tell you a story about a volcano that happened long ago.Part A (bars 5-20):  It's a sad tale about human helplessness and suffering in the face of natural catastrophe.Part B (bars 21-36):  The people living in a town below a volcanic peak were going about business, leisure, and play, experiencing the ordinary cares and pleasures of life.Part C (bars 41-52): One day, without warning, the volcano erupted, with smoke, falling hot rocks and ash, and hot lava flows.  Some folks got away, but others were killed, buried or injured, and all that was left of the town was devastation, suffering, and, eventually, calm.Part A' (bars 53-end):  A sad tale, but may we learn from it, and may the souls of the poor victims rest in peace. If you listen to and read the lyrics of Arolas's great tango, La Cachila, or listen to another superb tango of his, El Marne, you will witness further his talent and skill in composing dramatic music.  My piano arrangement of La Cachila is for sale on this web site.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.540712 Composed by Therese Brenet. Contemporary,New Age. Score and parts. 92 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #62097. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.540712). The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de L’Armée de L’Air, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for?
