SKU: A0.1273630

Composed by Martin J. Van Klompenberg. Chamber,Classical. 44 pages. Martin J. Van Klompenberg #865773. Published by Martin J. Van Klompenberg (A0.1273630).

I spent six years of my life driving through the Arizona desert, memorizing I-10 between southern Phoenix and Tucson. The Sonoran Desert, while driving, can be both incredibly boring and amazingly exciting. The sand, rocks and cacti create an amazing, almost unending tapestry.

On the outskirts of Phoenix, sits the Desert Horse Pass Casino. On dark, clear nights, the lights of this casino welcomed me home. They could be seen from miles ahead.

Neon Lights over Desert Skies is the juxtaposition of these two ideas. The eerie solace of the desert, immediately broken up the lights and sounds of the Desert Horse Pass. Starting with a barely audible four note motif in the bassoon, the opening is a chorale of subtle changes, never quite resolving, when it is interrupted by the increasing chaos on the casino floor, where slots machines, blackjack tables and frantic activity provide a stark contrast to the unbroken desert.

Solo Guitar - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1028891

Composed by Scott A. Niebauer. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 7 pages. Ponticello Music #4364608. Published by Ponticello Music (A0.1028891).

A suite of short pieces for solo guitar intended to capture a unique yet popular idiosyncratic sound. Some of these are new works, some have been re-worked from older ideas. They all incorporate the idea of popular rock style guitar music being combined with standard classical guitar technique and notation.

Andante Tremolo creates an eerie yet nostalgic mood with a sixteenth note tremolo figure at the beginning that bursts into a middle section utilizing pull offs to open strings and a more rapid tremolo. It features a descending melodic figure that leads to nowhere...

Anniversary Theme is a half-remembered hum-along melody at the end of the formal celebration when the chairs are being put away but the decorations are still up. It uses simple harmonies that don't really make sense but just follow that same half-forgotten melody, cadencing here and there when they feel like it.

Cloudburst Arpeggio focuses on the chime-like campanella effect produced by a descending slur pulled-off to an open string, and then hammering it back on again. It begins with a straight-ahead arpeggio pattern going through a standard chord change, and then jumps off the edge of the cliff into other areas...

Mobile is a perpetual motion machine that rocks its way into an Arabic sounding riff in the middle. The low D tuning allows utilization of a drone on the high open D string that produces interesting sonic effects allowing for unique sounds to pull off to open strings.

Programme note

Our old, clunky answer machine would tape a minute of conversation when we didn’t answer the telephone quickly enough. If I picked up using the hands-free function on a different phone, then feedback was recorded over the top of the conversation. I guess even the most trivial of conversations has many layers of meaning, beyond the bare facts being related.

Nebraska, My Heartland was written to not only celebrate 150 years of Nebraskan history, but to express my own gratitude for all that the Midwestern way of life has to offer. It celebrates the natural beauty of the Sandhills, prairies, forests, and bluffs, along with the strength of its people, its flourishing family friendly communities, and its deep and rich traditions in the arts. I have lived near mountains, near oceans, and visited some of the most beautiful places in the world, but none of those places have ever felt as much like home as Nebraska.

Nebraska, My Heartland incorporates the poetry of both Willa Cather, the famous Nebraskan poet and writer who helped the rest of America gain an appreciation for the pioneer life, and Veronica Torraca-Bragdon, a contemporary poet and friend whose heart will always belong to Nebraska. Cather’s poem, Prairie Spring was chosen because it vividly portrays the struggles of the pioneers who originally settled here, yet juxtaposes this struggle with youthful determination, and the optimism and enthusiasm brought about by hope.  Veronica’s poem, titled Nebraska, is the centerpiece for the fanfare and celebration of a state that abounds with success in all of the ways that make Nebraska a great place to live.

The music begins as the sun is about to rise and burst forth with the promise of a new day. It speaks of Nebraska’s natural beauty and landscapes while the sweet song of the Western Meadowlark, our state bird, drifts on the wind.  Next, the changing seasons and thriving spirit of Nebraska’s people are portrayed with an energetic, youthful melody leading into a celebratory sesquicentennial fanfare. But as the seasons change, the listener is reminded that to thrive is also to persevere, and soon a storm begins to loom. First the rolling thunder, then the rain, and finally the full devastation of nature’s fury are realized by the combined forces of both ensembles. Yet, as hope springs eternal, we are reminded again of the strength of the pioneer and the roots that keep us anchored against the storm. Out of this resilience bursts forth a brilliant light signifying the future that is before us for this generation and the next, ending with words that summarize so eloquently how Nebraskans feel about their home: With loving beauty, you’ll forever shine!
