Arranged for large horn ensemble (10 or 11) plus additional timpani. This arrangement is written for 11 horns, but can be played with 10 horns as well. In that case the 5th horn is canceled and the cue notes must be played in the other parts. The solo horn is not intended as a soloist. The term is used because horns 1 to 4 generally form the original horn parts. It would be strange to name them differently, because horn 2 is normally a low horn and will remain so. The solo horn plus horns 1 to 5 generally form the horn and wind parts in the original score. Horns 6 to 10 generally form the string parts in the original score. The timpani are additional, but I think they add extra color and depth to the score.

The work was influenced by a traditional dance used to worship the fire-god where the participants involved would jump or leap through fire. Candela, a gypsy girl performs this Ritual Fire Dance causing a ghost to appear. She begins to dance with the ghost whirling faster and faster until the ghost is pulled into the fire, causing it to disappear. This brilliant arrangement of about four and one half minutes is written for advanced performers.

Originally forming part of de Falla's opera La Vida Breve (Life is short), it is fully of colour and excitement from the opening four bars, through the archetypically Spanish rhythms and tunes of the main dance, climaxing in the central fortissimo section which is stamped out by the invisible singers, and returning with even more colour to the original theme.
