An arrangement of a classic Sousa march. It's quite faithful to the original, with some instrumentation changes and a few tweaks here and there. It should be well within the capability of a school or college concert band. The dynamic markings are fairly unsubtle, but are crucial to making the piece work. Watch out for the sudden drops to 'p'!

A note about the parts: trumpets 2-4 are combined on the score for ease of reference, but are separated on the parts. Overture Grandiose is a thrilling concert overture for young band that provides exciting parts and numerous leaning opportunities for developing musicians. The divided parts offer both challenging and playable passages/ranges for the variety of skill levels present in young ensembles. Each instrumentalist is called upon to play a wide variety of rhythms, in addition to myriad articulation and expression markings. All instruments have moments where musical phrasing and contouring are paramount. The six completely different percussion parts would be ideal for a large ensemble with several percussionists. Students will challenge their musicianship skills playing bold melodies and intricate harmonies in this exhilarating piece.

This suite has an average length of about 15-16 minutes if the metronome markings are followed and it is in five movements:

1 Fantasia
2 Zeibekikos
3 Hassapikos
4 Syrtos
5 Antikristos (Karsilamas)

The style emulated in all movements except the Fantasia is that of the Greek urban music tradition known as “Rebetiko”. Zeibekikos in 9/4 (or more rarely in 9/8) and Hassapikos in 2/4 or 4/4 are the primary dance rhythms of this tradition, but also other rhythms like Antikristos (Karsilamas) and Syrtos are present quite often.
