Finally, after almost two years of work, we can present to the world the reconstructed score of Goltermann's Fourth Cello Concerto, a pillar, a fundamental milestone in the repertoire of every growing cellist.

This arrangement allows students to get the feeling of playing this concerto with a full orchestra while using only strings. No orchestral part has been forgotten or misplaced. It requires at least 2 double basses but for the rest, an ordinary music school should be able to handle this with ease.

This Critical Edition corrects every clear mistake and adds editorial markings where needed. 

A comprehensive 12-page comments section details all the notes found by our musicologists in the creation process.

A solo cello part, both marked and unmarked, is available separately, along with performing material for this version and the original version as well.

The composer and harpsichordist Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy was born in Paris in 1744, and died in 1824 in Villers-sur-Mer in Normandie. She married Jacques Brillon de Jouy 22 years her senior,and had two daughters, Cunégonde and Aldegonde, Anne-Louise Brillon de Jouy had a salon in Passy whose guests included the violinist Jean-Pierre Pagin and cellist and composer Luigi Boccherini. Benjamin Franklin was also a frequent vistor and Madame Brillon has an extensive correspondence with him, including the period after his stay in Paris during the American Revolution .Many of her compositions were purchased in 1957 by the American Philosophical Society of Philadelphia, in honor of this friendship.

In 2021, French Pianist Nicolas Horvath recorded a landmark CD for Grand Piano (GP872-73) of Brillon’s keyboard noatas with extensive notes by Aliette de Laleu, Deborah Hayes and Nicolas Horvath and Christine de Pas The keyboard sonatas published here are intended to document this reocrding.

The twelve numbered sonatas, marked “Troisième Recueil de Sonates pour le pianoforte ou clavecin avec accompagnement d’un viiolon ad libitumâ€�, are in the hand of a copyist and are contained in a bound volume labeled as her Troisième Recueil (‘Third Collection’) and dedicated to Mesdemoiselles Brillon. Evidently the composer at some point chose these 12 sonatas to be copied as a sampling of her work for her two daughters. The manuscript is in the collection of the American Philosopical Society in Philadelphia.

The first of six  sonatas for four equal players published ‘avec Privilege du Roi’ in Paris in 1731. They were published as a set of parts for three transverse flutes or violins or other instruments ‘avec la Basse’. There are four movements, all in G minor, Adagio, Presto, Adagio & Allegro.  The only dynamic marking is the ‘Piano’ marked at the end of the last movement. The ornaments  - trills, mordants & grace notes - are all carefully included and further decoration of the parts was not expected in French music of this period unlike in Italian music. However, more experienced players should feel free to add a little more decoration at the final cadences of the slow movements. None of the movements have repeated sections and it is clear from the flow of the music that this is not an omission. Missing slurs have been added (dashed lines) along with a few phrasing suggestions. 

The arrangement includes a clarinet which would not have been  available until over 30 years after publication but this arrangement is most likely to be played on modern instruments so it gives a modern woodwind quartet the opportunity to play music of this period in the appropriate style. Players of intermediate ability will enjoy this piece.
