Percussion Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.934216 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score and parts. 22 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #6735411. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934216). Retracements (2021)This performance proposal features a performance of Retracements (2021) for percussion quartet commissioned by Kevin von Kampen, at the University of South Florida (USF) percussion ensemble. Retracements uses Fibonacci numbers and Phi proportions that mirror percentages used by stock market traders to predict corrections of trends in the market. Fib. numbers used in Retracements dictate the length of short sections in the work, while larger sections emerge organically and less predictably with regard to Phi (GS). In short, the work unfolds structurally through the impetus of determinate decisions combined with intuitive and indeterminate factors. In this light, the work is a musical realization of the retracement principle. I am indebted to Kevin von Kampen, assistant professor of Music at the University of South Florida, and members of the Percussion Ensemble at USF: Katie McCarty, Jacob Barber, David Grullon, and Wyatt Hatch for their careful preparation of the work (performance materials available from the publisher-MJICMusicPublishing@gmail.com).

Dance (2014) was composed for the Czech: Duo Contempo, Lenka Korzdeková, flute and Markéta Mazourová, percussion. It was premiered in the U.S. by Wendell Dobbs, fl., and Steve Hall, percussion. The work’s title serves a metaphor for the give and take/leading and following that characterizes the interplay between instruments. Dance is playful, clumsy, whimsical, mysterious, and fantastical. String Quartet String Quartet - Digital Download SKU: A0.934207 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score and parts. 44 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #3130883. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934207). String Quartet (2011)With tightly wound rhythms, dramatic figures, and an emotionally stirring performance, Mark Zanter’s String Quartet is nine attacca movements of beauty. American Record Guide  String quartet is an expansive single movement work, which during its course features members of the ensemble in various solo, duo, and trio combinations. The musical material-an interval series-is presented first in a fragmented, dissonant context that becomes increasingly consonant as the work progresses through sections that alternate intense rhythmic activity with calm, highly expressive solos.  The quartet was commissioned by the Ankara University Soloists String Quartet and was premiered at Marshall University Festival of New Music 2012 as part of their residency as Edwards Distinguished Visiting Professors of the Arts. The work received repeat performances during their subsequent mid-Atlantic tour.  String Quartet is approximately 20:00 in duration and is suitable for advanced performers. Performance materials available for purchase from the publisher: mjicmusicpublishing@gmail.com  The audio sample is the last section of the work. Small Ensemble Cello,Multi-Percussion,Soprano Saxophone - Digital Download SKU: A0.934204 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score and parts. 24 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #3130833. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934204). Elemental Spiral is the result of some of my recent work linking elemental aspects of esoteric. The work begins with an electronic prelude, and moves to the instrumental portion at about 4:00.healing and vibration (sound). The concept of matter and form being integrally connected and influenced/formed by sound has been studied since ancient times, and myths from various world cultures mention gods or beings that could manifest form from matter through their voice. Recent work by Hans Jenny verifies the connection between sound and form (see Cymatics).Similarly, the power of music to affect response in individuals is a popular subject of ancient and modern writers. My interest in the work stems from observing how people react to my music, in which I believe certain thoughts and feelings are somehow encoded, transmitted and received during performance. My research stems from a desire to increase my own awareness of sound, its affect, and to connect this to my art. The integration of dance with the music creates a visual relationship that marries the sound and its intention.Elemental Spiral maps elemental associations (earth, water, fire, and air) to the musical context in a deliberate fashion. At this stage my associations are fairly literal, and various qualities (i.e. earth=slow, fire=energetic, air=fast frenetic) are mapped directly onto musical material. The associations become richer when one state changes to another or comes into being (water->air, becoming earth etc.) and when various qualities are mixed (air-pitch with earth rhythm etc.).The intended effect is an overall balancing of the musical structure with desirable or pleasing proportions (the age old compositional question). This balancing is well known to all of us, for instance-elementally-much of Beethoven’s music moves between water and fire elements (mapping of speed and pitch), and the tempos of symphonic movements fast-slow-med. fast-fast is an affirmation that a balance of tempi and musical content is found to be pleasing.I express my deepest gratitude to Donald Laney who choreographed the dance for this work. He was somehow able to convert my musings into movement and in the process far exceeded my expectations. Special thanks also to the WV Commission on the Arts and the NEA whose support made the creation of this work possible.Elemental Spiral is suitable for advanced performers.Performance materials available for purchase from the publisher: mjicmusicpublishing@gmail.com

Alto Saxophone,Piano - Digital Download SKU: A0.934203 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score and part. 32 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #3130847. Published by MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) (A0.934203).    Kaleidoscope (2007) commissioned by David Wright, was written while my wife and I were in residence at the David and Julia White Artists Colony, Costa Rica. The tropical location was stunning but , other than permitting luxurious amounts of time to work things out. it was not a direct source of inspiration for the work.  Kaleidoscope employs the Fibonacci sequence (1+1+2+3+5+8…) to control surface rhythm and large sectional proportions. Though I am often explicitly concerned with proportion and its integration at various levels of most pieces I compose; I had never used Fib. because it seemed too easy, and I typically do not like to use processes that are external to a piece. None-the-less I really enjoyed working with the sequence and was pleasantly surprised when the last pitch in the saxophone, with a duration of 89 sixteenth notes, sounded just right. The work is suitable for advanced performers and is 13:00 minutes in duration. Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.934214 Composed by Mark Zanter. Contemporary. Score and parts. 64 pages. MJIC Music Publishing (ASCAP) #6134673. Star Pulse (2010)Over the past couple of years I’ve written a number of works for double second steel pans, all commissioned by Dr. Rick Kurasz who with several of his colleagues are seeking to expand the concert literature for that instrument. Originally Rick was scheduled to do this premiere at Marshall, but he had to cancel at the last moment. Interpreting this turn of events as an opportunity, I arranged the solo part to Star Pulse for electric guitar as part of an on-going, back-burner, pet-project. At present, the work is arranged for wind symphony and either, double second steel pans, or electric guitar solo.Grade level of the the work is 4+.
