Each season, the monks visit and sing Vespers at the church and, in turn, the Choir of the Church of St. Michael & St. George travels to the Abbey to sing Evensong. This setting of the evening canticles was composed for one such visit. SATB choir, flute and piano (ad lib.) - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.7540-E Composed by Derek Healey. Instrument part. 9 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #7540-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.7540-E). English. These songs are dedicated to William Osborne. The title Three Sacred Songs: was given to these pieces rather than the more usual terms anthem or motet because of the strongly secular presence in the texts. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

SATB choir (choir divisi) unaccompanied - Moderately Difficult - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8865-E Composed by Jessica French. Christmas. 18 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8865-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8865-E). UPC: 600313488658. English.Commissioned by Choral Arts Northwest, Robert Bode, director, this text focuses on the beauty of love and peace that can be found in the wondrous mystery of Christ’s birth. The bright light from the star and angels shining down on the manger is represented by the upper voices descending into clustered chords of light on the words “love came down.†The second element is a melody, initially sung by the tenors, that has a gentle, rocking motion—like that of a lullaby—representing Jesus’ mother Mary holding and rocking her child to sleep. These two themes weave together throughout the piece and finally coalesce to express the brightness of the sign that is signaled by the star and angels, as the upper voices sing the words “love divine,†painting colors of gold and white light illuminating the peaceful manger scene.

SATB choir, congregation, and organ - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8561-E Composed by Mary Beth Bennett. Funeral. Instrument part. 10 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8561-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8561-E). English.Winner of the 2018 AGO/ECS Publishing Award in Choral Composition, and composed in May 2017 on this specified text. The opening’s atmospheric and mysterious tone suggests a quiet mist over tranquil water, reflecting the trail of slaves through the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia escaping captivity. The chorus is used here as tonal color while the organ moves slowly beneath as a winding, rippling river. As this ends, the music breaks into a faster motive utilizing an underlying mixed meter. With the words “Oh don’t you want to go…,†the phrases become shorter and more urgent. As the chorus proclaims “That promised land...,†the work comes to an animated climax, the organ then emerging as a solo, dancing and finally growing quieter to the choral entrance at “where all is peace.†The congregation enters singing the traditional melody while three part women’s voices add a harmonic descant commentary. Finally, returning to the opening mysterioso style, the congregation sings “I want to cross over into campground.†Duration: 5:00.

Tenor voice solo, SATB choir unaccompanied - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.8478-E Composed by John David Earnest. 12 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8478-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8478-E). English, Italian. The conductor of Choral Arts Northwest, Robert Bode, asked the composer to write a work based on a text about The Blessed Virgin Mary. The final poem in Petrarch's most famous work, Il Canzoniere, was chosen, because it is a prayer to the Blessed Virgin. The composer first quotes a melody by Guillaume Dufay (1397-1474,) and then continues with his own interpretation of the poem, simultaneously using both the original Italian and its English translation, and a few other references to Dufay's music. Duration: ca. 5:20A review of CANW's performance of this piece comments: Perhaps the heart of the program came with the premiere of John David Earnest’s “Vergine Bella.†This gorgeous work caught up the listener from the start, the choir softly singing the first phrases on one note, while the solo tenor came in soaring above them in a beautiful melody..
