This is a reaction on the part of the composer to the brash commercialization of Christmas. Christmas is first Christ, Jesus Christ, His humble Birth in a Manger, the quiet tenderness of his Mother Mary and his Father Joseph, the surroundings of people who were prominent in their day but utterly unknown now. It is a reaction to wanting to go back to the Silent Night, the Shepherds Watching the Sheep by Night, etc. The spirit is quiet reverence for Jesus. This is arranged for solo voice (or womens' choir), flute obligato, strings (string orchestra or string quartet), and harp or piano. In other words, this is intended to minister to the quiet nobility of the true spirit of Christmas, with love and blessings.

This is written for Horn and Strings and could be an effective encore after a concerto is played by the horn soloist. The picture on the front of the score was taken from Waterrock Knob in the Blue Ridge Mountains. On the left of the picture is South Carolina; in the middle, North Carolina, and on the right part of Tennessee. A lot of horn players play the Alphorn too, and it is popular in mountainous territory all over the world. This Serenade is a light, feel-good piece and is enjoyable by performers and audiences alike. The format is all the parts followed by the full score.

This is a lively one-movement work for brass quintet, dedicated to some dear friends who are based in Brevard, NC. Besides being the site of the famous Brevard Music Festival every summer, they are also located in the beautiful mountains of NC, and Looking Glass Falls is a favorite tourist attraction, and they named their group, Looking Glass Brass, after this beautiful spot. This piece would be great for part of a concert or background music for receptions and parties. The music includes a score and all parts.

Scored for oboe, French horn, harp and strings, the harp part can also be played on piano if a harp is not available. Even though the musical example is a MIDI it was blessed by our Dear Lord in that this recording is, in the opinion of the composer, better than most MIDI renditions. In this world of uncertainty and turmoil this is meant to comfort the listener on its own, or be background to appropriate scripture reading and in general musically bless whomever hears this to get closer to the Lord and Savior and know that prayers are always answered, not necessarily in our time but in His time. I personally have been blessed and through this composition am trying to share my feelings of comfort and gratitude. This composition is not limited to Church orchestras per se, but to any group of musicians who love the Lord and want to share with all listeners the spirit of comfort and gratitude. The PDF downloaded has the score and all parts. The picture on the title page is of the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.

Mood Swings is a novelty piece for the clown of the orchestra, the bassoon! It is scored for bassoon and piano. It is happy-go-lucky in nature with a mock-noble (grandiose, if you will) middle part for general contrast. This will be a fun piece for the young bassoon student, as well as a novelty piece for any occasion. Everyone knows that the musical performer (soloist, especially) must be a master of mood swings, acting through the medium of his or her instrument. On the other hand, artistic temperaments with mood swings are generally scorned by society. We shall see!

This is written in one broad movement for a Flute in C quartet. I wrote it because I love the flute and want to incorporate a theme and variations approach. Each terrace gets a little more involved with counterpoint, etc., in the tonal fabric, building up to a dramatic tension point and then a D.C. back to the beginning to hold it all together and come to a final cadence. It is loosely based and inspired by the Baroque dance suite approach, very freely using the drama, echoes, tensions and cadences, telling a story. It is motivated by universal human experiences in living life (the drama of the terrace dynamics), making the most of opportunities using available resources -- all that good stuff! The title page is a dramatic photo of the Northern Lights from Alaska showing terraces, starting with our earth and looking upwards to infinity. The audio clip is not a sample, but a MIDI rendition of the whole composition.

This is not my first string quartet, but I think this is great program music; the titles of the movements (One of Those Daze, Reflections, Good Times) speak for themselves. The first movement explores rhythms and different meters (same pulse). The second movement is calming and reflective, like a prayer. The third movement is euphoric and probably the easiest one to play, which can be welcome if your group is giving a concert. Needless to say, the two outer movements are good for gigs such as receptions and parties. The score and each part is included in one PDF. Audio will be forthcoming upon being recorded.
