Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1315421 By DaCapo Primary Music. By Carl Herring. Classical,Contemporary,Instructional,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Educational Method. 106 pages. DaCapo Primary Music #904157. Published by DaCapo Primary Music (A0.1315421). This book contains 66 songs for the instrumentalistThe Complete Instrumentalist Two is the second book in a series for instrumental players, designed to help develop excellent musicianship. It is written in stick notation* with an additional five line stave so that pupils or teachers can write out the music in whichever clef or key they choose to use. The songs are grouped by the number of notes in the piece and are mostly diatonic with a few pentatonic and modal pieces. As with all of the DaCapo books it is left to the teachers to decide which section of the book to start with. Tempos and dynamic markings are also left to the teachers and pupils. We have suggested activities that can be applied to the entire repertoire and there are some extra ideas for specific pieces included on some pages, along with extra information for the pupil. In many instances the songs have been reworded as it was felt that the subject matter or use of language was a barrier for some pupils. There are a few pieces where this may still be true but we have decided against rewording because of the cultural or historical aspect of the song and the opportunity to educate children beyond the music (e.g. spirituals).Whilst every attempt has been made to source music in the public domain we would like to know if errors have been made. We hope that you enjoy the next step to becoming a Complete Instrumentalist.Jane Cutler Carl Herring 2012*stick notationThe purpose of stick notation is to build excellent inner hearing. You can't guess the intervals – they have to be known or learned via the solfa in order to hear the music from the page. Pupils can then translate and transfer this to their instrument and then onto a five-line stave.• We show the rhythm only - with solfa syllables under the relevant note• No note head used unless for a minim, dotted minim or semibreve• The home note or tonic of each piece is indicated by an emboldened solfa syllable e.g. d r m f s shows do as the tonic • Where notes fall under or above the home note or tonic, they are indicated thus: s, d’• A tick’( I ) has been used instead of bar lines. You can find more DaCapo pieces for young instrumentalists at DaCapo Music Shop

Cello Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549261 Composed by James M. Guthrie. 20th Century,Contemporary,Instructional. Individual part. 7 pages. Jmsgu3 #3479689. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549261). The Fantasia follows the general scheme of the classical sonata-allegro form. A repeated fragmented motive characterizes the primary theme. The transition introduces pentatonic and synthetic materials that dissipate into a Lydian chord. The Lydian mode provides materials for the lyrical secondary theme section. A closing section revisits elements of the synthetic scale from the transition. After a repeat of the exposition, the development section begins agitato, fragmenting and transposing various diminutions of the primary motive. This is interrupted by a double augmentation and then a bariolage passage leading to declamatory statements of the primary theme transposed eventually to the subdominant. After modulating the transition materials, the secondary theme is developed in the subdominant. This time, the music is adjusted to explore a quotation of the first measure of Bach’s Cello Suite I. This treatment dissolves into a two-part transition (quasi-spiccato), leading to a final development of the Lydian motive, this time in double stops. A final transition section provides the thematic impetus for the third movement. The recapitulation ensues with the re-transition somewhat truncated and the secondary theme transposed to the tonic. A coda section dissipates excess energy while developing Lydian ideas in preparation for a quiet closing that repeats the now-broken Lydian chord.

Concert Band - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1152172 Composed by John Philip Sousa. Arranged by Wesley Besancon. 20th Century,March. Score and Parts. 62 pages. Wesley Besancon #752386. Published by Wesley Besancon (A0.1152172). Throughout Sousa’s career as a conductor, he often altered the performance of his marches without marking or changing the printed music. These alterations were designed for concert performances and included varying dynamics and omitting certain instruments on repeated strains to expand the range of the musical textures, as well as adding unscripted percussion accents for dramatic emphasis at key points in the music. Although Sousa never documented his performance techniques himself, several players who worked extensively with Sousa provided directions for his frequently performed marches, most notably cornetist Frank Simon. Sousa continued to conduct many of his earlier marches later in his career with these unique alterations, but he rarely returned to several of the marches composed between 1873 and 1880. Although no written confirmation exists for how Sousa might have performed these earliest compositions, select elements of his typical performance practices can also be applied to these marches. “Our Flirtation†is the earliest march for which Simon documented Sousa’s common adjustments in performance. The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa appears in chronological order and is based on some of the earliest known sources for each composition. These newly edited full scores correct many mistakes and inconsistencies found in the parts of early publications; however, all remaining markings and the original scoring are preserved. Additionally, the alterations traditionally employed by the United States Marine Band in performance are incorporated throughout; either those specifically documented by Sousa’s musicians or changes modeled on the customary practices of “The March King.†Performance practices that deviate from the original printed indications are described below and appear in [brackets] in the score. In many instances these indications appear side-by-side with the original markings. An open diamond marked with an accent in the cymbal part indicates that the cymbal player should let that accent ring for an additional beat before rejoining the bass drum part. Second strain (m. 21-38): The dynamic should drop to piano first time through with piccolo, E-flat clarinet, cornets/trumpets, and trombones tacet first time. Additionally, all clarinets should play down one octave as indicated by the cued notes. All instruments rejoin fortissimo and at the original octave in the first ending. A percussion accent may be added in m. 29 the second time. The printed percussion figure in the first ending continues the previous pattern, yet muddies the pick-ups to the second strain and may be omitted for just that one bar as indicated after the downbeat. Trio (m. 39-54): Piccolo and cornets/trumpets are tacet once more as well as cymbals, but trombones have an interesting part in the texture and may continue to play softly here. All instruments rejoin for the fortissimo pick up notes in m. 54. Interlude/Break-up strain (m. 55-70): A percussion accent may be added on beat two in m. 62 and 70, both times, to match the accented chords in the rest of the band. Final strain (m. 71-end): The first time through this strain is piano once more and piccolo, cornets/trumpets, trombones, and cymbals are tacet again. First and second B-flat clarinets should also play one octave lower as indicated by the cued notes. All instruments rejoin in the first ending for the repeat of the break-up strain and play fortissimo to the end.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.926660 Composed by Michael A. Morizio. A Cappella,Christian,Sacred. Octavo. 112 pages. M.A. Morizio #3588371. Published by M.A. Morizio (A0.926660). During the late spring of 2017, I began composing a new choral piece based on the 1 Timothy 3:16 text. I was studying Paul's first letter to Timothy at the time when this particular passage jumped out at me. Not only was it an efficient summary of the Gospel message, but it was also a textual grouping, or form, such as might be found in a traditional hymn. What I was reading were indeed lyrics to an actual 1st Century Hymn to Christ, the music of which has since been lost. I entitled my piece, Great is the Mystery. I composed the anthem for SATB (a cappella), and set it to the ESV translation of the scripture. Based on its context, I suspected the song would work great for Ascension Sunday. Our choir sang the piece beautifully, crescendoing at the finish to the words, Believed on in the world and taken up in glory! Later that spring, I played the piece for a dear friend of mine who is Pastor at Immanuel Church in Manchester, New Hampshire. What he told me was actually a bit stunning. He informed me that there were (at least) seven specific known Hymns to Christ written into the New Testament Scriptures, whose text is found among the writings of the apostles’ Paul and John. The 1 Timothy 3:16 verse that I had selected for my piece was indeed one of those texts. At that moment, Pastor Don and I made a pact. If he were to supply me with the literal Greek translations of the other six known Hymns to Christ, I would set out to compose brand new anthems for them all. A new musical collaboration had begun.  With this short introduction serving as the genesis of my new song cycle, I offer you these new Seven Anthems to Christ based on the seven known ancient ‘Hymns to Christ' texts found in the New Testament.

Composed by Fazil Say. This edition: piano reduction with solo part. Downloadable, piano reduction with solo part. Op. 25. Duration 28 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q7002. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q7002). My Violin Concerto consists of four movements whose inspiration is loosely connected with Scheherazade’s One Thousand and One Nights. The first movement is set inside the harem; a variety of women from the harem are introduced, each with her own different personality. The second movement is a frenzy of dance – in effect a party night with an abundance of different types of dance music. The third movement depicts the next morning and consists primarily of variations on a well-known Turkish song. The fourth movement begins dramatically, but develops during the course of the movement more and more into a reminiscence of all the previous events and the work culminates dreamily in a happy mood with sensuous oriental sounds. As appropriate for an oriental soundscape, the orchestra includes a series of Turkish percussion instruments such as a kudüm or bendir, but also glockenspiel, marimba und vibraphone, celesta and harp. It is however the solo violin which tells the story and also accompanies the listener through the entire work. The violin part is highly virtuoso and unites the four movements into an intensely atmospheric whole in which the solo violin soars off into a solo cadenza between each movement, sometimes accompanied by one of the percussion instruments. As is customary, the present piano reduction is initially intended as an aid for the study of this work, but during my tour programmes with Patricia Kopatchinskaya and Burhan Öçal we have utilised this material to create a trio version for violin, piano and percussion. French Horn,Piano - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549569 Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Score and part. 16 pages. Jmsgu3 #3508195. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549569). Duration: ca. 3:20, Score: 10 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. A delicate masterpiece, not very difficult - suitable for a recital encore. Grieg Background In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and BedÅ™ich Smetana in Bohemia. Legacy Grieg is especially celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen. Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46) Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain. Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.Register for free lifetime revisions and updates at www.jamesguthrie.com

He also experimented with different woods and configurations to improve the instrument's sound and versatility.Teaching and Influence: Quantz was a renowned flute teacher who significantly influenced the development of flute playing and composition during the 18th century. In summary, Johann Joachim Quantz was a prolific composer, an influential flute teacher, and a key figure in the evolution of the flute and its music during the Baroque period.
