I adapted this movement of Bizet's only symphony for my high school orchestra so that they would have the experience and challenge of performing a major symphonic work written by Bizet when he was 17 years old-like many of them. The movement fit programing concerns (only lasting 12 minutes, 8 minutes without the repeat) and instrumentation demands for the orchestra I had at the school at that time. I found limited similar repertoire available that was appropriate to challenge my students. I was also personally motivated to dig deeper into this piece by adapting it, much like early composers learned by serving as copyists for previous musical legends. More recently, I performed this as a guest conductor with a senior level honors orchestra in Massachussetts. In both cases the work was the focus of musical stimulation as well as inspiring fully engaged student conversation about many aspects of this movement. In short, the students enjoyed preparing and performing the piece, almost as much as the audiences were impressed by the performances. Hopefully Bizet's teacher at the Paris Conservatiore, Charles Gounod, rewarded Bizet with a good grade! I put in the extra time to publish this so that many other students would have the opportunity to study this piece, composer, style and period of music. Elijah Jovan McClain (February 25, 1996 – August 30, 2019) was a 23-year-old African-American massage therapist from Aurora, Colorado who was murdered after being placed in a chokehold by police and being sedated by paramedics. On August 24, 2019, an Aurora citizen reported to police that McClain was wearing a ski mask and looked sketchy, although the caller also indicated that he did not believe anyone was in danger, and that he believed McClain was unarmed.  The three police officers who were involved in the incident, Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema, said that their body cameras were knocked off during a struggle with McClain. McClain was forcibly held to the ground with his hands cuffed behind his back, after which an officer applied a chokehold and paramedics administered ketamine to McClain to sedate him.  While being transported to the hospital McClain went into cardiac arrest. Three days after arriving at the hospital he was declared brain dead, and he was removed from life support on August 30.  McClain's autopsy was inconclusive. Duration:  4:30 This work makes extensive use of easy double stops on the violin.

This elegiac piece was composed by me in the wake of the awful massacre on Friday, November the 13th of Parisian citizens by murderers of French and Belgian background belonging to the self-named terrorist Islamic State. As a college student in London in the 1950's I invariably took in the City of Light during my many summer holidays spent in Europe, usually accompanied by my best friend, Gerard, of Lyons. He taught me how to savor the best that a French restaurant had to offer, as his mother was a Cordon Bleu when it came to the cuisine of that fair land. We also visited Brussels in Belgium and the French Riviera and parts in between to partake of the various excellent wines that the region had to offer. En route to settling in the USA two decades later my family and I spent a few days in Paris, so that I could convey to my wife and three girls what France had done in contributing its language and culture to so many parts of the world, including out native India. In some small way, I offer this effusion of grief in a positive, if not joyous vein, because that's how the melancholic chords end - in a tierce de picardie from A minor to A major.
