A close acquaintance of mine had immigrated to New York from there, and her descriptions of her home were always compelling. My affection for West-African culture and acknowledgement of Africa's seminal role in the roots of jazz lead me to create this piece out of respect for my friend and Africa's culture and history. The main theme came from a seed of melody I heard one night listening to master pianist Randy Weston.

While I'm far, far from commanding this style, I wanted to write a piece that showcases both my striving towards and affection for bebop. ​ As in many bebop compositions, I created this melody based on the chord changes to I Got Rhythm, a common practice in the period.

Most musicians struggle from time to time with how long it takes to compose new music. That was definitely true of most of these tunes, but Seventh Sun came to me in just a couple hours on a Sunday morning during my writing process. Listening back, it seems I was creating a nod to Chick Corea's Humpty Dumpty, but at the time I wasn't consciously thinking about Chick's masterpiece. ​ The title refers to the day (the seventh sunrise of the week) as well as a play on words referencing the mythological seventh son trope. ​ Gerald Clayton's genius is apparent here, as the tune is extraordinarily hard to play and he had only a short time to learn it.
