The Italian group Black Box covered Fantasy in 1990 on their debut album Dreamland. This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonalities as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun. NB: There are no bar numbers because repeats are in different places in different parts. There are rehearsal marks for navigation and no page turns. The level is on the easier side of “advanced�; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students. Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite for solo piano by Maurice Ravel, composed between 1914 and 1917. The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I. Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements.The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. The specific Couperin, among a family noted as musicians for about two centuries, that Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin the Great (1668–1733). Ravel stated that his intention was to pay homage more generally to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suite, not necessarily to imitate or pay tribute to Couperin himself in particular. Tchaikovsky composed another work for solo violoncello: Pezzo capriccioso, Opus 62. It is dedicated to Brandoukoff (Brandukov) with whom he had performed this little virtuoso piece for the first time at the famous salon of the Benardaky family in February 1888. The soloist himself suggested a few minor changes in the solo part. Even Maurice Gendron, the great cello virtuoso and teacher, attended to the work once again, not only 'bedighting' the solo part in a virtuoso manner but also adding a cadenza, an extended recapitulation and a lengthened ending to the Pezzo. The present edition enables the performer to get an accurate picture of the different versions and layers. The fingerings, bowing indications and interpretational aids - except for in the added parts - are by Maurice Gendron.

Created during the First World War, Maurice Ravel's composition 'Le Tombeau de Couperin' casts a longing look at the past while at the same time being full to the brim with traces of modern music. Each of the six movements is dedicated to friends who died in battle. In 1919 Ravel arranged four of these movements for large orchestra by skilfully borrowing melodic lines and colours from the piano setting. In the present new arrangement written for the Stella Piano Trio, these elements were adjusted to the instrumentation and their relationship within the ensemble. As in Ravel's orchestration, each note is taken into account, even if the cello is sometimes given a melody which is an octave lower than the original.
