Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite originally for piano, composed between 1914 and 1917. Each of its six movements is dedicated to the memory of friends of the composer who had died fighting in World War 1. Ravel himself was an army driver during the war. Tombeau is a musical term popular in the 17th century meaning a piece written as a memorial. It was Ravel's intention to pay tribute to his friends and pay homage to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suites, of which Couperin was a master; this is reflected in the six-movement structure of Ravel's piece. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet includes the Fugue, Forlane and Toccata. The Prelude, Menuet and Rigaudon are available on SMP Press in another arrangement under separate cover. Ravel liked Le Tombeau so much that he later orchestrated four of the dances, ending with Rigaudon. Arranged by accomplished violinist Ted Lucas, who has decades of string quartet experience, this lively dance is a perfect concert-opener or an ideal closer as an encore. This is the only piece in Le Tombeau where Ravel did not include a metronome marking, so it can be played at any spritely tempo you are comfortable with. Take a listen to part of it.

This work fits well in recital, as well as serene settings. Length: 6 minutes.   Note to both performers: In keeping in a chamber music concept of sharing melody and accompaniment, the arrangers have decided against printing a completely separate trumpet part, as working from the score encourages both players to view the composition as chamber music, which aids in the awareness of the other performer, and thus creates the strongest possible performance.   Note to trumpeters: the flugelhorn works well as an alternative to the trumpet in this work.
