Debussy originally wrote this piece in 1890 (L.69).  It was first published as Tarantelle Styrienne in 1891.  He later revised it and republished it in 1903 as Danse.  After Debussy's death, the great Maurice Ravel arranged it for full orchestra.This arrangement is for String Orchestra, based mostly off Ravel's orchestration, but also the piano part in some places where the harp that Ravel wrote in is unplayable by strings, whereas the piano part isn't.  Overall the intention is to retain as much as possible the texture and dynamic of the orchestral version in a string orchestra setting.

This arrangement of Ravel's Pavane for a Dead Princess, by Ronald and Avis Romm, features not only a strong connection to Ravel's original work for piano, but also a trumpet line that pays homage to the horn part of the orchestration, and also features a short section of original composition in jazz style that fits in beautifully over the piano melody. This work fits well in recital, as well as serene settings. Length: 6 minutes.   Note to both performers: In keeping in a chamber music concept of sharing melody and accompaniment, the arrangers have decided against printing a completely separate trumpet part, as working from the score encourages both players to view the composition as chamber music, which aids in the awareness of the other performer, and thus creates the strongest possible performance.   Note to trumpeters: the flugelhorn works well as an alternative to the trumpet in this work.

This awesome depiction of a boat on a vast ocean was originally scored, like the composer's Alborada del Gracioso, for solo piano, and is also fearsomely difficult. Ravel later orchestrated both works, and his amazing gifts in this field give us extremely valuable insight into his imaginative conception of this watery scenario. Richard Simm was inspired by the magnificent orchestration to build upon it by arranging it for two pianos instead of one - a combination which Ravel himself often enjoyed using.
