Brahms composed this short piano piece in 1853, when he was around 20 years old, as a contribution to a guest album. It was recently rediscovered and published in an Urtext edition. The piece has a pastoral, four-bar central theme featuring parallel thirds in the hands, giving it an orchestral character. The B section becomes more transparent, with the parallel thirds disappearing. Brahms later reused the theme of the Albumblatt in the Trio section of the Scherzo movement of his Horn Trio Op. 40, composed around 12 years later. This reworking shows the composer expanding on his original idea and making it richer and more satisfying in his mature work. The Albumblatt is considered an early, relatively simple composition compared to Brahms' three piano sonatas written that same year. However, it is still a valuable example of the young composer's genius. The main editorial issue is the unexpected piano marking in measure 47, which seems out of place for achieving a melodic climax and may have been a mistake by Brahms.

It captures the wonder and awe of that night divine when Christ was born. The organ provides a shimmering backdrop for the choir, including richly textured added-note chords.  After building to a full climax, the piece ends with sopranos sustaining a single note, with the full choir echoing quietly O holy night.

The lyrics are in a confessional style, while there's a theme of self-determination in the metaphorical ladder of the refrain... The song features on Paula Cole's debut album Harbinger (1994) and runs the gamut of emotions from the urgent, unaccompanied opening strains and melancholy of the verses – to the striving, optimistic, melodic refrain and the joyous climax with divided voices. The original main vocal melody is given to the first sopranos, with the rest of the choir offering a gentle, rhythmicised ah accompaniment in the verses. The crunchy chords and occasional dissonances of the original are dramatised and intensified by the live choral setting. The piano part often operates independently, providing harmonic and rhythmic support and a robust bass in louder passages. No sheet music was originally issued with the song – perhaps because of the richly detailed texture of the women's backing voices – and this arrangement by David M. Hoyle represents the first commercially-available transcription/arrangement.

There is an optional innocent-sounding part for a children's chorus, but if this is not available, the part an be sung by a group of sopranos (A). Starting quietly over a repeating ground-like organ figure, the question of the title is asked by a solitary line of high voices and then answered in harmony by the chorus. The texture gradually enriches and the intensity builds. The final verse features a descant part, ending the carol with a rousing climax! This carol works very effectively in a Christmas carol concert or church service.
