He Will Lead Me Home (choral church anthem composed in 2023)The InspirationA few Easter seasons ago, during one of our Tuesday Choir rehearsals, we were preparing for “Good Shepherd Sunday�. Diane our Choir director commented “there are very few Good Shepherd pieces to choose from�. One of our sopranos replied “Let's write our own�. I made note of it and this past year finally found the time and inspiration to give it a try. I did my usual research on the subject matter and then found a drawing of a Shepherd standing at the top of a hill with his sheep lined up behind him. Leaning on his staff the Shepherd was contemplating the safest route home. Upon his decision he looked back and called to his sheep. The MusicThe music begins with a piano introduction depicting the Shepherd standing at the top of the hill contemplating the safest route home, as noted earlier. Stately in nature it features a simple melodic idea, played by the right hand, which is then answered by a series of majestic chords. This “back and forth� continues until it reaches its climax at a D flat major chord against a slur from a high G to F. At this point we hear what will be a reoccurring chordal theme of C major to F major and later C minor to F major. The accompaniment begins, now in three quarter time signifying the sheep beginning to move in response to the shepherds call. The verse melody is drawn from the opening three notes of the introduction but with a different rhythm and repeats it self with underlying harmonic changes. The melody and chord structure is somewhat impressionistic in nature. Lyrically a contrast is drawn between how the Shepherd (Jesus) provides for his sheep (followers) and how God provides for the “sheep� (animals) through nature. As the verse comes to an end we are lead to the realization that “the shepherd is the Lord our King, the Good Shepherd King�. The refrain begins with the tenor continuing to solo on the main melody. �He Will Lead Home� is realized and proclaimed! A soprano descant is added for contrast. Harmonically the music makes use of the various minor key options, “melodic, harmonic and natural�. The refrain concludes proclaiming “The Good Shepherds the Way He's our Life!�. The second verse shadows the thought pattern of verse one leading to the refrain once more but this time a bridge is introduced to add drama with the piano playing a significant role. A return to the refrain is varied with the tenor singing a portion of it against softly played chords; but then resumes its rhythmic drive to its ultimate conclusion by repeating “the Good Shepherds the Way He's our Life!�.Program NotesVoicing can be varied based on what types of singers are available. For example this could be sung by 2 tenors with one singing the descant down an octave. Finally as noted in the score, the intro is optional though I prefer it be played; the shepherd contemplating a safe route is important in the music with its contrast to the verse music and important in our life of faith.

I received an email from Joel Quarrington in 2011 with a request to buy a score and a set of parts to Hylidae … The Tree Frogs (1991) for violin, double bass and piano. He said he would like to perform the work at the next International Society of Bassists convention in Rochester, New York.  I told him That is great.  But it’s such an old work.  Why don’t I write something new for you?   He said, How much would a commission cost?  I said, Let me write the piece first and if you like it, we can talk about a fee then. I began work on Toccata for Double Bass and Piano in late August and completed it on October 15.  I sent Joel the music as a PDF and MIDI file via email.  He wrote back, The piece looks really terrific and I have enjoyed listening to it as well, thanks for the midi file.  I couldn’t be happier! Toccata is in three movements, fast-slow-fast, with internal ABA ternary forms in the first and last movements - also fast-slow-fast. Moderato … Trio … A tempo. Adagio. Allegro … Trio … Reprise! The first movement begins with a driving dotted-note motif in the double bass accompanied by an insistent sixteenth-note bass-line in the piano left hand and a soaring quarter-note melody in the piano right hand.  A Trio follows which features a lyric melody in the double bass … molto cantabile!   The double bass returns this time stealing the sixteenth-note bass-line motif from the piano left hand.  The double bass pushes the music forward relentlessly and ferociously … holding no prisoners!  To add counterpoint to this madness, the piano comes back with the quarter-note melody but in octaves this time.  The left hand joins the melee occasionally to push the music forward until it reaches its climax at the conclusion. The second movement, Adagio, is a slow waltz.  The mournful tune is delivered by the double bass at first, then it’s passed on to the piano, and it goes back and forth between the two.  The third movement is a 6/8 romp, very syncopated and jazzy.  The music goes back and forth between the double bass and piano, not unlike when the musicians in a jazz combo trade four’s among each other.  An adagio Trio follows.  The tune is in the double bass: long descending lines over a languid piano accompaniment.  To complete the ABA format, the music from the beginning of this movement returns as a reprise. ENJOY!!! Commissioned by Joel Quarrington for a premiere performance at the 2013 International Society of Bassists Convention at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

The music is consistently melodic, with harmonies that are modal and consonant. The piece begins with a simple, folk-like theme, played by the solo flute, alone. The theme is then repeated in the full band, with a chord progression that is not as simple as the tune seems to imply. The piece continues with several variations on that chord progression. Some variations feature the soloist, some feature specific sections of the band, and some use all the resources of the full band. Some variations are brisk and playful; some are quiet and tranquil; some are expansive and forceful. In the final variation, the full band builds toward a climax, and then, just before the final chord, stops abruptly. After a moment of silence, the solo flute, again playing alone, reprises the theme, and a quiet two-bar coda in the woodwinds and horns ends the piece.

Hölderlin’s late lyrics offer a certain riveness between equation, lunatic bursts and a dissociated smoothness. This ‘riveness’ can be found in the work’s concentrated character, which combines fragile colours of piano and flute, an eruptive climax and exactly organized lines and motives. During the thorough revision of the score, 17 years after the composition of the primary version, I tried to preserve the character of the piece with its strong influences from Alban Berg’s expressionistic style, but to accentuate the musical ideas of the work more exactly and subtly at the same time. It begins with the solo timpani thatimmediately sets the sneaking tone for the arachnids that have begun crawling. After a build-up in the woodwinds, thetrumpets introduce the terror with the main arachnid theme. From there, the tune is shared throughout the ensemble, givingnearly every instrument a chance to play the arachnid theme. A contrasting, calmer theme is introduced, simply to give ussome hope and relief that the arachnids will leave. The piece gradually grows more thick and dissonant over time, withwebby textures of woodwinds and muted brass. A short coda with the full ensemble ends the work where the piece reachesits climax.

'The Storm' is an action-adventure score cue from The Little Mermaid (1989), in which Prince Eric's ship is caught in a storm at sea, and ends with Ariel rescuing Eric. This is the first action cue of it's kind from Alan Menken's extensive repertoire of Disney animated film scores. 'The Storm' makes extensive use of the Prince Eric leitmotif, which is featured throughout the film in both major and minor keys. It opens with the melody from the 'Jig', and makes reference to 'Part of Your World' near the end of the cue. The melody from 'The Storm' also makes its reprise in the climax of the film. The Little Mermaid (1989) score garnered Alan Menken his first 2 Academy Awards (best original score and best original song), with many more Oscar winnings to follow.This arrangement for solo piano is a reduction of the full orchestra, and is suited for Intermediate+ pianists.
